1GGTZE???? Thu, 06 March 2003 12:06 Go to next message
OK, we all know that the 1G motor came out in three variations, the NA 1G-GE, the supercharged 1G-GZE and the twin turby 1G-GTE.

My question is, how hard would it be, and has it been done before to grab a stock good condition 1GGTE and throw the supercharger off the GZE on it and run close to stock boost through both forms of compressors? I know you'd need custom intake manifolds and a new computer and lil fiddly bits, but it wouldn't be 'that hard' would it?
Considering its basically the same motor with different forms of induction, shouldn't it be a basic bolt on of the supercharger?

Anyone shed some light on this plz?
If i do get my planned soarer, i think this would be a good way to reduce that unhelpful turby lag that it has.

Thanks
Ben

PLZ- no flamage, im still young and dont like heat.

From memory toyota released a 1000cc race engine with both supercharger and turbocharger opperated by some kind of electric clutch...or somthing like that
the SC would kick in from the word go up until the turbo started spooling then it'd drop out, well somthing to that effect

as to how hard it would be to do, not sure

there are probably some draw backs to this kind of set up as it doesnt seem to be widely used(if at all?)

This engine does exist. I think it might be some kinda toyota race engine tho.
I know Bill Sherwood brought one but i don't think he used it and sold it back to the place he bought it from.
It was only a single turbo tho.

Didn't Toyota used to use an S engine with a twin charge setup back in the ST165 days for rally?

It could well be done, just gotta make sure you hook it up with the pipes in the right places and with a suitable decent bypass for air around the SC once it's doing nothing. Easiest way is to shove a big daddy turbo on there with the SC blowing into it and a decent sized (e.g. 80mm) bypass valve (Goyen maybe?) that opens once boost exceeds, say, 8psi. The other way is to have a turbo going into a SC, with both operating full time, like the Bandag Bullet and some other similiar (big fat arse diesel) projects. Probably wouldnt work that well though...

Someday I'd love to play with a setup like this on a smaller engine like a 1g and try to have it pull big HP and still drive well.

its easy
the supercharger has a clutch type pulley on it
just use an rpm activated switch to turn it on at say 1500 rpm then turn it off just as yr turbos start makin boost
if u r lucky the standard ecu might get the mixtures close due to the map sensor/air flow measuring boost from the supercharger much earlier in the rpm and adjustin for it

Twincharge kits have been available for 4A-GZE's for years. The general concensus with the MR2 boys in the US is it's a nice gimmick, but a well setup turbo engine can acheive the same results for less money and much less screwing around. It seems like a great idea, but there's a reason you very rarely see twincharged engines on road cars...

a guy recently came onto the forums, he has a 2wd hilux with a 1G-GTZE in it

im pretty sure if u search the forums you will find who he is, he may be able to help.

also this topic has raised a lot of interest on the performance forums, there is a VERY big thread with many inciteful posts, diagrams and info, well worth a look.

good luck with the project..

EDIT: by the way if you do start this project u have to start with a complete 1G-GZE and add bits from the GTE, not the other way round.
