ok, I found out the other day that my reverse lights dont work, and then yesterday noticed a cable hanging out the bottom of my gearbox.
now, I'm assuming this is the reverse cable (it's a w58 box).
is there an easy way to get this back into the cabin so I can hook it up??

if you look closely on the transmission you should be able to find out where it plugs into ..i believe the left side of the tranny.

so it plugs into the tranny, it's not a cable coming from the tranny?
obviously I haven't been under there yet, or I might have a clue

I'm not sure exactly what that box looks like, but it "should" be on the left side towards the top!

I've got exactly the same problem!!
two wires hanging from my gearbox, and no reverse lights.
Thing is my car was factory Auto. When some little japanese kid converted it to manual, he didn't connect up the reverse lights.
You need to track the lights down from the rear - pull some stuff off and find the colour of the wires from the reverse lights, then try and find them again in the front of the car. (or look in a manual). Then you'll need to connect one of the wires from your gearbox to earth and the other to the earth of the reverse lights (or is it positive?).
Then when the stick is in reverse the lights will light up.
If you want, we can organise a weekend and track it down in both our cars together.

Don't worry about the color of the wires coming from the box. They simply are two ends of a switch. When you select reverse gear, it merely closes the switch, allowing power to get to reverse lights. Polarity is irrelevant.
As for which set of plugs to use, just turn your ignition on and with a test light see which one has power. Use that. See if the reverse lights work. See if on one of them the wire color matches that at the reverse lights. Sometimes the plugs have little exclusion ridges such that only a certain plug type can plug together. You'll need to sus it out, but it shouldn't take longer than 5-10 minutes.

aahhhh
someone had told me that the box wires had polarity, so I was worried about blowing a fuse or light
if there's no polarity, I'll just stick it in reverse, and poke the wires in different holes until the lights come on
