what v8 r u runnin
usually if the original engine is a single coil and the new engine has multiple coils is when u get problems
theres things u can buy to make the tacho signal compatible or i have some tiny electrical devices that can modify the signal that might work
is it a lexus v8? if it is then u might need an adapter
7m gte with 3 coils and 1jzgte with 6 coils i havnt been able to get a good signal for the tacho
u can use an msd tacho adapter on the 7mgte to get the tacho to work ive done this and it works
soon ill be tryin the msd tacho adapter on a 1jzgte and hopefully itll work too
these msd adaptors cost about 120 bucks

Sideshow,
What have you got that will allow me to use my original MX83 tacho (originally running a 7M-GE) with the 1UZ I'm now running?
I've been told I need to get a 4-cyl unit (as I run 2 4-cyl ignitors, 1 for each bank, and the tacho signal is taken from one of these...)
If you've got something that will help, I'm all ears!

um r u runnin factory computer
if u r then all u need is the ig- signal from the diagnostic plug
take that rpm signal and run it thru the msd tacho adapter and hope it works
i cant garantee itll work
i know it works on a 7mgte

just leave the tacho till last
connect the ig- wire from the engine diagnostic plug to the original tacho wire which would have been connected to the original coil and see if the tacho works
its a trial and error thing
if it doesnt work send me an email and i can tell u some things to try to get a better signal output to yr tacho

It can be sorted out one way or another - even if it comes to an electronic divider circuit on the coil.

On a side note, Grant, do you know if a 1GGTE will be able to run the factory GA61 (digital same as Robbo) factory tacho?

sideshow, i've already tried hooking it striaght up to the ig- or the same as the negative side of the primary coil of the igniter.
It doesn't work.

I'll look into making a multiplier/divider circuit for my own reference over the next few days.
Aside from that, another way around it is to fit a hall switch onto the front of the crank, and a chopper disc with 3 blades. Then run it to a simple amplifier/capacitor/inductor circuit (similiar to a coil+ignitor) to produce an adequate voltage to keep the tacho happy.
On the 302 you MIGHT be able to pinch something from the front of a later model (multi coil, not dizzy) falcon V8? Swap the timing case or something?
