pilot pen kinda noise from my 7afe?

Hi all,
When i'm in 3rd gear and accelerating from 5000-5500 rpm the engine makes the noise u'd expect from dropping about 7 or so of these pilot pens onto a table (think back to ur school days):
This is still happening on back-to-standard timing (had advanced it w/ the dizzy before) and BP Ultimate  I think my engine is screwed but it hasn't really lost any power.
Does anybody have any experience w/ this, or have any idea what it might be??

oh yeah, it only sometimes happens in 2nd gear, doesn't happen in 1st gear, and i don't think it happens when i'm out of gear..haven't tried it in 4th gear for obvious reasons 
It's really and on-and-off kinda noise..it only happens about 2/3 of the time i drive, regardless of what petrol i'm using.

The noise you're referring to is probably your engine pinging. When did ya have it last tuned?

It could be something quite simple. My car was making a bad rattling noise at certain RPM's, and it just turned out to be the manifold heat sheilding vibrating.
The source of noises from under the bonnet are really hard to pick...

thanks for ur replies..
danners, i thought it might be pinging, that's why i set my timing back to standard (actually it's a bit retarded now i think) and put BP Ultimate, but it still makes the noise. So if it's pinging now, my internals must be really screwed.
Oh yeah, this engine has previously stuffed up a bearing (hammered it around w/ NO oil  ) Could this have anything to do with it?
Dahashrat, thanks. yeah my mate's mr2 makes a horrible noise at high revs from the heat shield..i might try taking it off for a while and seeing if it still makes the noise.
