I have my car in the shop at the moment having the boat anchor removed and a 5MGE fitted. They have however encountered a few problems, that I need advice on, please.
The first problem is with the distributor, mine is mechanical and the one on the G is electronic, which does not seem compatible with what I have.
The second is with the TPS, the throttle position sensor is all different too.
I was under the impression that this conversion was as simple as swapping air flow sensors.

There are 2 generations of 5MGEs. The early ones have mechanical dizzies, the later ones have electronic ones. Sounds like your 5MGE is a late one. See if you can source a mechanical dizzy. Otherwise, it's a simple case of modifying the 5ME dizzy to fit the 5MGE.
I don't see it as an easy job to modify the dizzy, the 5MGE one is much shorter and feeds off the cam near the top of the engine, where as the 5ME feeds much lower down in the block. Any ideas where a mechanical dizzy may be sourced from??

You'll need to take it to a machinist, but the modifications required are fairly straight forward. You need to shorten the shaft, get gear pressed on, and get a base plate made. A friend did this to get a 6MGE running with a 5ME ECU only a month ago.
Cost was about $100. Other than that, I'd suggest ringing around to locate a mechanical dizzy. I'd imagine the price for one would be similar.
I can provide you with my friend's email address, and he can outline the exact nature of the mods required.
EDIT: Check your PM.
