taking apart my mate's exa today, we found metal chunks and oil stuck to his sparks, which inspired me to have a glance at mine.

There was the expected oil residue (with the amount I burn), other than that, the tips were dry and covered in a grey/brown coloured residue, which was DAMN hard, very rough, and all over the tips.

any ideas what this tells me about my engine, and are they ok or should I buy new ones?
My engine still seems to run fine ... fine being a subjective term, with how mjuch smoke it blows

metal chunks?? doesnt sound good... has it been detonating? head gaskets can break down with detonation, but i dunno if any pieces of the gasket would be noticeable on the spark plugs.

plugs should generally be a brownish colour on the electrode if fuel mixtures are good. white/grey would indicate lean, black carbon = rich, wet = oil.

are they rough with buildup, or is the surface pitted from detonation?

well
mine are rough with a grey/brown buildup

my friend's car detonates ... and it's not gasket, although a coupoe of the larger chunks are
these are slivers of metal, some not so small.

His mechanic took the head off to adjust the tappets a while ago and said "you need a new engine... very soon", and I cant imagine it's got better since then Smile
his plugs were wet with oil and black carbon buildup, but i knew they were screwed Smile

I was actually really suprised my plugs were totally 100% dry, because my car burns a LOT of oil..... any ideas how this could be possible?

does anyone know if it's normal to be burning oil but to have perfeectly clean sparks?
towards the middle of the plug, away from the actual igniter, there was oil where the spark is threaded, but the end was dry.
In my friend's car, which also burns oil, the end of the plug was soaked

ideas anyone? (please?)

What sort of fuel do you run in your RA-65, I heard that the lead replacment stuff made ur plugs brown/orange?

Pretty well tow ways you burn oil, through the valve stems or the rings. If you car blows somke (when warmed up) after letting it idle for a while then giving it a rev it is prbly the valve stem seals (I don't know how you tell that the rings are gone?, besides the somke on start up....)

It sounds like you are burning all the oil that does manage to get into the cylinders tho.....

Hope this helps.

Cheers
