1JZ manifld pressure thingy... Wed, 12 March 2003 19:07 Go to next message
I eventually got round to plumbing my boost gauge in again today (seeing as the last place i put it wasnt safe enough to hold the pipe on, and resulted in me blowing off the hose to the MAP sensor at full boost.. not good).

Anyway, look at the pic below.. its my new piece i've used to plumg the gauge in,

by the way, it screws into the inlet manifold, you cant see from the pic, and feeds the pipe to the MAP sensor (the bit to the left), and now also my boost gauge line (thats the orangey bit with the pipe in it at the top).

Now, below is the old bit (pic below). But this is confusing me a bit..

http://www.jzasupra.com/nit1.jpg

The old bit (which just fed the pipe to the MAP sensor) is a funny shape, and it isnt a straight through hole from one side to the other.. it appears to follow a route inside the part, perhaps going through some filter or something to straighten/restrict the air flow...

now, my new bit obviously doesnt do this (air in - air out)and i'm wondering if it will cause any probs to the MAP sensor.

I cant fit the adapter *and* the original air bit on as there isnt enough room..

Anyone know if the stock piece is designed to tamper with the air flow in some way? Does anyone know what it does to the air flow?

Cheers
adi

Adi
EPCD lists it as a gas filter.
Not sure of it's exact function though.
Isn't it advisable not to tap into the plumbing for the MAP sensor and Fuel Pressure regulator? It's what Ive been told - don't know how true it is.

i would NOT use this setup if i where you effectively what you have done is add a bigger volume to the map sensor pressure line this could create a slight delay in the map sensor pressure signal .it MIGHT create a lean situation

I realise the volume is minimal but in engines milliseconds matter .also gauges CAN leak a little this would effectively bleed air from the map line

the filter was there for a reason to prevent the map becoming clogged with oil and condensation and alike .

simply tee any vacuum line other than the map line .and keep boost below 15 psi

easiest way to fit boost gauge fit a small tee pice add a short length of vacuum hose .slide the boost line inside the vacuum hose and fit a cable tie around it add a dob of super glue (where the hoses join) 2 min job

half the factory hoses are fitted using an adhesive and no clamp

just a side note cable tie evry single vacuum hose on a 1j EXCEPT the map that way if for some silly reason you overboost it pops the map line and the engine runs full rich

I thought the drop in pressure to the MAP sensor would be so small it wouldnt make a difference? I suppose youre right though , better safe than sorry.

Are *all* the hoses that come off the inlet manifold related to pressure then? Could i tap into any of them?

I've tried loads of things to keep the nylon tubing attached to vacuum hose, and none of them work. I dont really want to run the risk of it blowing off again so im still going to use the above connector, but perhaps on another line as you say.

Anybody know which one? got a piccie you can point to?

anything after the throttle body is fine . have run 25 psi with the above setup for boost gauge it has NEVER failed on dozens of cars one had intake temps of 100 degrees celcius(WHAT A KNOB) and even he didnt blow one .
it would take longer to type your post than actually do it

the most important thing is to get the filter back in

Begging your pardon celicamad, but if you overboost and pop the hose to the MAP, won't you run *lean* ?

The engine will be getting heaps of boost, but the ECU will only recognise atmospheric pressure.

It is my understanding that is the line does come off the map sensor the computer sees that you are at WOT so it will goto limp home mode and run pig rich.
