In-tank fuel sensor question - AE86

Guyz, I have a feeling my fuel gauge on my AE86 dash is giving me false readings, the 'fuel' light seems to come on too early and the gauge is already at it's minimum, but i can still travel up to 50km's more!!! (This is a GZE powered sprinter) I've noticed this because I seem to be filling up way too often and especially with these prices, I need to get this accurate!
-Is there a way i can get into the tank to the sensor?
-Or has it got to do with the instument cluster?
-would an aftermarket fuel gauge be more accurate?
appreciate it.

on my jap import with the digi-dash cluster the warning light comes on when there is still 10Lt in the tank (scale change feature on the guage shows this) thus it seems that your guage is working correctly, also its probably not the best idea to run your tank till almost empty (cause any crap in the tank will be picked up), another bonus is if you ever lend the car to anyone, you can rely on the cheap bastards always returning the car when almost empty, thus if the think it's going to run out of fuel they will probably put some in it to get the car back to you.

Im glad that my light comes on BEFORE fuel runs out, think if it be otherwise . When light comes on I can still travel about 100KM's and find gas-station.

Fuel stays in the tank. It doesnt go anywhere even if you fill it more often.
I pay 1.2¤ per litre and with my quick math it's equivalent to 2.16 aus$ .
You find from your trunk(rear left quarter) plate that is bolted with three screws onto floor and under that you find fuel sensor it's attached with 8(from memory) little screws wich are rusted so that you cannot undo them.
I think most(read all) CHEAP aftermarket meters are really dodgy.

haha, so everytime i see the low fuel light come on, i'll just lend my car to a mate...
At the moment my car is stuck on the driveway on a downslope, with VERY little fuel in it because i wanted to test how far i could go when the fuel light comes on, and if it was infact accurate - sometimes it goes down to minimum and then comes back up, so that's why i got fishy. So I know how far i can go if my car doesn't start!
JDM Hatchi: ur car came with the digital dash or you got it from somewhere? I want one!!!!!!

my car came over with the digi-dash, it was one of those little things that i didnt know it had when i saw the picture at the importers (like my red-line tail lights, and power windows) things like these make getting an import give you flash-backs to christmas days when you are just a kid, thus from now on when any of my mates get an import it only takes me 5minutes before i start unscrewing things to see what they have got but didnt know about, (the ammount of nissans with rechipped commputers will blow you away!!), as to getting a digi-dash, one of my mates adapted a supra cluster to his 86,took lots of work, and doesnt quite fit that well but the desired result was achieved, only those in the know will spot that it shouldn't be there.

Audioslaver: it's likely that your tank level sender is worn, and thus shows an empty voltage to the gauge, even when there is still fuel there. when it's totally full, does it show slightly below the F mark?
in my understanding, the senders work on variable resistance, and this will get higher as they wear out,so your readings on the dash will alter.
I have a digital dash in my car as well, and have a similar problem, but worse. mine has a dead spot between about 3/4 full and 1/4. the gauge will occasionally work between those levels, but will generally display dead empty. I have to use the Odometer for the main, and then watch the gauge as it comes good when the tank starts to empty out. with the secondary scale showing 9 marks(out of 15) I will get fuel surge if I push the car hard, but it will be fine dribbling along in traffic for another 40km or so. a refill from the sec-scale 10 mark is 42L.
the car has a JDM EFI tank, and OEM fuel pump.
carby engine/analogue dash fuel level senders are not compatible either btw.

The warning light works on a seperate circuit, that's why there's 3 wires going to the tank. But if the light comes on, even if there's a bit left in the tank, fill the bloody thing! Besides, how does it solve the problem of rediculous fuel prices if you run the tank out? You gotta pay eventually anyway... Oh, and a new pump costs more than the $3 extra petrol you might scrounge from the tank...

fergo308: - When i fill the tank up fully, the needle only goes to HALF! i've been driving with this for ages, but the thing i've been thinking recently is: 'have i been filling up everytime when there is like $10 worth still in the tank?!'
Mind you, with these prices i fill up only $10 - $20 only. How do i get to the tank level sender?
Mrshin: - I only fill up in $10 - $20 increments, for eg. the other day i was making my way to uni (bout 50km) and filled up $10 from an empty tank--so i thought. Then when i was almost there, my fuel light comes on. Tell me that's great fuel economy, or does my wallet need more eco-mmidation????

Stop worring about how far you can drive when the light comes on. Whats it gona prove? All you will be able to say is "i can get 80kms before it runs out of fuel"
Give you a tip. When you go to the fuel station fill it up. If you fill it up, it will still cost the same in the long run. It also means you don't have to stop at the bowser in another 2/3 days to put another $15 in.

the tank sender is in the boot, under the keyhole shaped plate on the driver's side.
and yeah, you have been filling up with fuel left in the tank,if it's been showing empty, and filling it right up takes all of 30l.
I don't fuel my car $10 at a time,so I can't talk about that.
