7m - Big end bearing? Sat, 15 March 2003 03:51 Go to next message
ok Im pretty sure i have done a big end bearing in my 7mge. Really loud knock coming out of the engine.

When it happened the car automatically shut off. I drove it back to this party then home later. It went alright at first but by the time i was almost home i had to leave it at a mates house because it was so bad.

In the morning we discovered there was no oil. Is this a sign?

Anyone else done a big end. Whats it likely to cost. Is putting another engine (1jz) in a cheaper option. My parents will be paying for the engine up front, they dont really want to get me a turbo, so the easier it is on the pocket the better it will be.

im pretty sure a jza70 manual front cut will be out of the question price wise. my supra is manual so all i need is the crossmember and bellhousing correct (for the gearbox anyway)

thanks

yeah man id say youve done a big one...costwise all depends on how much damage youve done to the crank and bottom end...it u kept driving it id say u mightve done a fair bit..u need to have the crank and bottom end checked now...removal and refitting of the parts will probably cost you lots...go a 1jz Very Happy

You will be hard pressed to get a 1JZ bellhousing to suit a W58. If you want to get a 7MGTE half cut that would work fine - the box & clutch will bolt straight up.

Problem is that the non turbo box isn't as strong as the turbo box... so you would be better off buying a JZA70 half cut for the better box and the better engine.

that w58 will work fine man. Unless ur looking for 500hp+ the w58 will have no problems at all. And by the way..someone in parts for sale here has 7 bellhousings for sale for 1jz to w58

Yep, you probably spun a big end bearing.

Then you ask:

In the morning we discovered there was no oil. Is this a sign?

No, that's the reason why the bearing spun. If you checked the oil level regularly, I'm almost certain we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Another question:

Is putting another engine (1jz) in a cheaper option. My parents will be paying for the engine up front, they dont really want to get me a turbo, so the easier it is on the pocket the better it will be.

The cheapest non turbo option is replacing (and then looking after) the 7MGE. A secondhand 7MGE will set you back 700-1200.
Contrary to popular opinion, engine conversions generally aren't cheap. A 1JZGTE conversion will set you back around 5K (ballpark).

ok thanks.

yeah i did skip a few oil changes due to lack of funds but that is no excuse.

doesnt castelmaine rod shop or someone make bellhousing for the r154 to adapt to custom applications.

what is involved with wiring? does any one know the price of a 2jzge?

if i just get the motor not a half cut, do i need after market management?

If you missed $40 preventative maintenance due to fund shortage, are you sure it's wise to jump into a venture that is 100 times more expensive?

You have three options:

7MGE $1500
7MGTE $3000
1JZGTE $4500

A 2JZ is a nice idea but it's a big job and you won't get away with it for much less than $10k. You can get a manual TT half cut for $6k but you'll need custokm wiring, etc. If you're doing a conversion just buy the whole half cut, it's a lot easier and it will SAVE you money, even if it costs twice as much.

If you buy just an engine then you will need an aftermarket ECU.

$26.80

Point made.

Can't check oil, therefore unlikely to be able to do full conversion. What else are we to assume? Rolling Eyes

well actually i did have money for oil change. i also had a $135 speeding fine and a court hearing ($400 it ended up being) in which i had to worry about.

yeah i know it was a stupid mistake. but if i can get a better engine out of it, that will be good. i planned to put one in the end of this year anyway. my parents will be paying for it so there is no need to worry about, embarking on a high finance project.

and i wont be doing the conversion. my mechanic will

HOOOaahhhhhhhh, ok - now youre into MASSIVE money spending territory

guess it comes down to what your folks are prepared to spend on you. i dunno if theyll be too keen on spending +$10k on a turbo conversion. why not just go to an egine exchange place, and for $2200 (total cost) get a fully rebuilt 7mge installed, drive away.

BM Higginbottoms comes to mind...

cheers
ed
