Car Stereo wiring problems Sun, 16 March 2003 12:21 Go to next message
Just bought my mk2 supra today
Had a cd player already installed but when turned on all you got was static from the speakers.

so i took it out to have a look at the wiring to see if somthing had come loose.

well first impressions where shocking!
What they'd done was cut off the factory adapter thingo and tried splicing(not sure if it was ever succesful) a new "female" adapter onto the factory stereo wiring(this was done because the cd player came with an adapter hardwired onto it, not just bare wires like most do)

now after noticing that some of the splices werent even taped up to cover the wires, and that the ground wire wasnt attached to the car end of things i quickly disconnected the cd player and shoved everything back in.

What i want to know is if anyone has a wiring guide for the mk2 supra stereo as there are 6 loose wires all up(comming from the car) and i'd like to know what they do, in fact i'd like to know what all the car wires do just to check to see if the idiot who tried doing this in the first place even got it half right.

i dont have a mulitmetre so that poses a bit of a problem
hopfully somone here can help me, either that or i give up and pay some "professional" to do it for me Sad

i would go out and buy a cheap multimeter and it isn't that hard it gets a bit tricky when you don't know the wiring diagram for the stereo , but you can use a AA battery to figure out the speaker wires in the car it will make a scratching noise then all you have to do is find out the + and - its all common sense, what colour are the wires in the car and i may be able to figure it out for you

yeah do the multimeter thing. Ill explain it a bit more. Connect the multimeter to a ground on the car (usually the black lead) make sure the keys are on the 'lock' position and check each wire with the other probe (usually red) until you have one that shows a voltage (between 12 and 13.Cool this is the constant power wire (positive +) then put this wire aside and turn the keys to 'acc' now and check the wires as before for voltage. This is the accessory wire. if there is an illumination wire do the same with the car parker lights switched on. if you find one this is the 'illumination'wire.

Next for the speakers it will be obviousif they are aftermarket speakers in the parcel shelf etc but if they are factory use the battery trick and find which ones will make the speakers crackle. toyotas always use a striped wire for the negative speaker wire.

easy as that.

if you cant be stuffed buying a multimeter - just buy a cheap dodgy $2 test light from any hardware/electronics/auto store.

As far as the battery stratch/POP test goes - i myself use a 12V cordless drill battery, and inspect the movement of the speaker when i apply the 12V. If the speaker moves "outwards" then you have the speaker polarity correct.
Another thing to note is - with some mid 80's toyota's, there was some use of "common negative" for speakers. If you find this is the case, then you MUST rewire all the speakers to avoid damaging any aftermarket head unit you might use.

Also - dont forget to solder AND electrical tape ALL connections. You should be able to find the earth wire in the wires there, but if not just use a nice healthy chassis point.
