1jz idle problems Tue, 18 March 2003 03:56 Go to next message
The car is a 1989 MA71 us spec with a 1jz swapped into it.

I got the car started tonight for the first time in 6 months. It is still doing the same exact thing it did 6 months ago. It idles very high(didn't have the tach installed, but I'm guessing 3000, that is were it was last time) and after about 30 seconds, it starts flucting between say 1200 and 3000, very quickly, like you are revving on someone. I had pulled the harness and rewired every single connection I had previously made and every shielded wire was run from the ecu to the sensor using un-spliced shielded wire. Again, I do not have the cluster installed, but it threw no codes last time.
A newer ISC valve and TPS was installed while it was tore down. A little background on it.
When I first did the swap, it fired up and ran perfect, no problems other the knock sensors needing rewired, which was solved the same day. It ran absolutely perfect with no type of problems. One day I started it up and it idled high, turned it off, restarted and it was fine. Started happening more and more frequently until it did it every single time I started it. Right before I tore it down, is when it started to jump in the idle from 1500-3000. Checked everything I could think of and everything the list offered and never found out what it was. I figured the ecu was getting a dirty signal from a sensor from the wiring and having spliced all the shielded cables. Tore it all down and now she is doing it all over again......... Any help appreciated, or anyone with a similar problem

my 1j did the same thing it was caused by a severe air leak . a blown intercooler hose had a masssive split in the bottom .also make sure you run the map sensor off the little round filter on the manifold not just any vacuum .

it hunted almost EXACTLY as you desribed .idle for a while then up and up and down ....PISSED ME OFF ..until i found it

have you run diagnostics to get the fault codes ??

if youve checked the idle control valve and all hoses etc.

the only thing i can consider is plugs my mates 1j wouldnt even idle with 10,000 klm plugs. get NGK bkr6e or bkr6es is better
gapped to 0.8mm.Change em every 5,000klm but at $3 each they are cheap
