Broadband Internet Tue, 18 March 2003 06:24 Go to next message
I wanna connect to a broadband internet service, but dont know what the best option would be for me.

What broadband do the sydney guys on here use? Keep in in mind i am in a rented flat in chatswood, I hear some companies wont provide service to an apartment.

atm I am thinking of going with TPG adsl 256/64 connection. I have to buy a modem $125, but it is only ~$70 a month for unlimmited downloads.

What do you think ?

thanks in advance

Matt

Check Internode's ADSL. They have unlimited too.

Also, if you haven't seen this site, then go!

I use iinet too and find it good! Also there are a few isp's getting into adsl soon and will have 65gig download limits! They will also be having competitions to see who can download the most, But in my opinion this is no way to get customers! I will be staying away from them for sure! Sounds like optus all over again!

what kind of speed can i expect.

with my current dialup tpg connection I get really good service.

often maintaining over 6 kps (total) on multiple downloads.

Are there issues relating to adsl that make it les atractive than other forms of service, cable etc ??

thanks

You do the math.

Your modem is 56.6kbps.

The ADSL that you want to get is 256kbps down and 64kbps up. Downloads should be about 5 times faster.

Good thing is that you can still use your phone even while you're connected to the Internet!

For a nice comparison of your choices check out this site:

http://www.broadbandchoice.com.au

I would go for iinet's 79 dollar package if I was in your position.

Cheers

Thanks guys

I was only asking about speed because even though a dialup is supposed to be 56k, the best I have ever received is only 6k.

Is there a simmilar difference between maximum speed and average speed for adsl ?? or can i expect close to 256kps downloads (depending on the source).

I'll check out the links
thanks again

Matt

You mean you've only been able to download at 6kB a sec? The 56k rating is in bits, and there are 8 bits to a byte.

So theoretically the maximum speed you could get something on a 256kb connection is 32kB a second. Thats the difference Smile

Plus, with ADSL you WILL connect at 256kb, where as with a modem it can vary.

At the moment there is a Melbourne based company(that offers in most maj city's) offering rediculously priced internet. eg.

$80 for 35Gb/month and they have unlimited plans for $15 extra a month.

www.suckmypipe.com.au Razz

they even have competitions for who can download the most a month Laughing

Yea there are heaps of those cheap plans around, but they are only 256Kb/s download, which aint that much faster than dialup.....I dunno if your going to go broadband get 512Kb. Still 256Kb could download you an awful lot of stuff in a month.

the limit on downloads/uploads will disappear soon.......according to sources - competition will take care of this.

telstra is good for me, i have cable on a 3gb plan, 89.95 per month, its been SO FUCKING DODGY lately they've been giving me a 25% discount each month starting january....

telstras' DNS servers leave something to be desired. i think i'm currently running off ozemails DNS due to contiual failure of telstra to supply...
