BLOWN HEAD GASKET!! :-(

Hi guys sorry but kinda urgent.
My mums car is a 93 Corolla with 4A-FE motor. Problem is tonight she was driving, parket in a carpark and left. She came back later to start the car to go home and the car wouldnt run properly. NRMA came and declared it a Blown head gasket!!
How the hell does a head gasket blow like that? What are the possible causes of a gasket just going like that ( i know overheating can cause it). She told me the car didnt even overheat.
Finally does anyone know of cheap and REPUTABLE places in Sydney that would do a head gasket repair at a good competive price?
Thanks.

Factors in a head gasket going include age, kilometers on the clock, type of driving, type of fuel, if you have the correct spark plugs, tuning of the engine, etc.
Ive seen a 4A go for over 250000K with no probs, and ive seen one with 30000 after a full rebuild do head gaskets like no ones business. It can just be bad luck some times.
As for getting it fixed in Sydney, cant help, im in Adelaide...
Craig.

I dont know of any areas cause im in victoria but you will probably be looking at anywhere from $300-$500... Because not only do they have to change the gasket they need to flush the cooling system to remove oil and drop the oil to remove water...

The biggest thing that causes head gaskets to blow is poor servicing. If your cooling system has run cr@p coolant (or water) or not been flushed regularly then often an alloy head will corrode which can cause a head gasket to blow.
The repair cost depends on exactly what caused it to blow. Depending on how bad it is the whole motor may be junk.. or best case scenario a mechanic can do it for about $400.

DAmn thats being nice, $400 is pretty cheap for a HG repair, i know a fella with a celica 89 model cost him $1k to fix it...My guess it to shop around...Yeah poor servicing, flogging the ass of it, letting it get hot over time - not overheating, just running hot, poor coolant and cooling system maintenance, poor mechanical servicing, detonation, the list goes on...and on....and on....

offer cash is another tip...my new head and toyota Hg cost 1400 cash...not too bad considering the fully recod head was 700!!! Make sure they put a genuine HG on it...not a supercheap one or itll blow again in no time...a lot of engine rebuilders put shitty ones back on.

actually fit a good metal head gasket .the factory ones are renowned for being only so so .
also get a full radiaotr flush and flow test change thermostat
the BIG secret is to run toyota fcatory coolant ..its red .without boring you with the details .the particular alloy used in toyota head is prone to corosion .the toyota coolant ALWAYS stops this . even in WRC they use factory coolant

a mate is fixing his flatmates, girlfriends, budgies (etc) honduh civic (maybe early 90's?)
quote for labour alone was $1600!!
thinking it was a bit too highm he started pulling bits out, then more bits, then more, and finally got the point of undoing head bolts _6 hours later_!!! took almost twice as long to reassemble...
no wonder they charge a bucket load for labour.
for gaskets i'd recommend the ACL monotorque series. never had a problem with them.
the most competetive price will always be you (or another toymods member) )

Guys thanks for your assistance. Your all awesome.
Guess what. Turns out it wasnt in fact the head gasket. Rather someone had opened up the car and tampered with the internal engine so as to do quite some damage. It was running on 2 cylinders.
Stupid NRMA road service were the ones who diagnosed a cracked head gasket but the mechanic said the HG was fine after all!!
Weird.
Thanks again,
Tuz

fuck thats weird, lol one of the symptoms of a blown head gasket is running on less cylinders...my mates 83 mazda 626 blew one and was running on 3...wouldnt back up his driveway.
