Just wondering about how much a conversion would be to put a
1JZ-GTE with manual g/box into a cressida? for parts and labour.

depends dude
could be up to 5 grand plus for a workshop to do it
its about 2 grand for front cut maybe
then if u want manual gbox u might have to pay more
then u need to fabricate hoses intercooler etc
u might need better fuel pump
and then theres exhaust
then u should save about a grand for little things u always forget during a conversion

the wiring is a big job too if u dont know what u r doin
i have wired a 1jzgte in a cressida
i used the 1jz auto box and wired that up too
was big job but i wanted everything to be right like dash lights for gbox
manual/power switch
cruise control

so far only prob is that the 1jzgte auto box has digital sensor for abs
and original abs sensor was analog so have to still play round with abs
and u will need a tacho adapter cause the tacho signal is wrong

The Toy Shop sells JZX-91 half-cuts for $3,500
FMIC and 3" exhaust will add another $3,000 at least.
Fuel pump and RRFPR about $200
Then you'll want to think about a boost controller, guage and BOV - at least another $500
The 1JZGTE ECU's are supposed to be pretty good - though adding an Apexi S-AFC II would improve things a lot - $1,000 fitted.
Probably need a new fuel pump and surge tank - $700
You'll need to have the tailshaft modded as well as engine mounts and X-member modding.
Then freshen the engine with timing belt, fluids, etc.
Then you're really going to need to upgrade brakes and maybe suspension too

Apparently wiring in the autobox is a PITA - but still it is a lot cheaper than going manual with a W-58.

And engineering can add up to $2,000

So, even doing all the work yourself - it is a pretty expensive conversion. BUT if you do it well, you will have an AWESOME car that flies down the freeways!

With intake and exhaust mods and boost turned up to 12psi, you should make somewhere around 220rwkw. Not bad for the old Cressi!

Good luck,

Justin

justin has taken a more performance oriented look at things... a lot of that you dont need.
if the cressida is efi, no need to change the fuel pump or anything
3" exhaust is a good idea (since you'll need a new one anyways) and that will probably cost around $1200 for a 3" mandrel bent, with cat and muffler (more if you want a good cat and good muffler)
the half cut will come with a FMIC, which is good enough to start with

gearbox is where you will run into problems. it comes with an r154, which while indestructable is also heavy and difficult to fit to a cressy.
the w58 is the more usual option, though you have to find 2jz-ge flywheel, starter motor, etc to get this to work.

engineering... well in sydney, that'll cost you $450.. other states i have no idea.

hopefully luke replies - he's got one on the road

ok a few things

first i'll assume mx83 this is the easiest conversion

1 .The factory fuel pump ABSOLULTEY WILL NOT DO you need AT LEAST 2000cc/ min the factory 7mge flows 1500cc/min (at best).

i have heard of people getting away with one but as soon as you can get a in-tank supra pump costs about $250

use this formula KW(at engine) times 8= cc/minute

a bog stock 1j makes 208 kw so 208 * 8= 1664 cc/miniute

this formula has a little bit of a sfety factor

so the factory fuel pump will JUST cut it . MAYBE !!!

220kw 2 wheels = about 282 kw at engine 282 * 8 = 2250 cc/min

so a 2.5 lpm pump would be best suited

the other problem is hot fuel if your pump flow is too slow recycling to the tank the fuel in the rail heats up too easily hot fuel = less power but most of all more likely to detonate

one guy brought a pinging jza70 to me after fitting FMIC etc it still pinged .

i told him it was the pump...new pump no ping and the factory pump in those has VERY good flow .

a 4.5 LPM pump for a supra is available ex us for about $250 AUD

otherwise draven is pretty much spot on

JUSTIN please do not give advice on a conversion YOU obviously have NOT done people read this shit then go and do it

im not putting shit on you but it is important to know what your talking about before you post this shit

ok chaser half cut $2500-$3000 asian autos
factory FMIC bolts on as does all plumbing (assuming mx83 cressida) if not it will fit with a little work

chaser crossmember bolts in ...no custom mounts

if you go auto no tailshaft or gbox mounts .but you will need for manual

$1,200 for exhaust $450 for twin pipes
aftermarket intercooler is MUCH better but factory can still get an auto Cressida running HIGH 12 's

BOV is a waste of time and illegal in NSW .the factory BOV works fine .

boost control well mine is around $250 and i have run 4.8 0-100 @ 15 psi with it(normally 5.3 still @15 psi)

NO need for a rising rate fuel reg if your going to run an interceptor .In fact the only reason for the fuel reg is to use a tuning tool .by actually leaning out the fuel .buying both is silly
BUT IT WILL MAKE AROUND 10 or 15 H.p @ wheels so ditch the crappy POS apexi and run a fuel reg or fuel reg bleed or my fuel controller ..cuts boost cut and leans fuel out to around 12 psi

personally i belive all interceptors are a complete waste of money ive NEVER seen one make more than 10 HP YET!!!!!

a draven said engineering no more than $500 and is $350 at MANY places

factory mx83 brakes will cut it ...good pads machine disks etc
IF not just fit the chaser brakes they bolt in and where good enough for the chaser

suspension ..ummmm well id rebuild the stock and whack in a sway bar .with my 1&1/2 lowered kings and kyb it sure handles great but the softer factory rear end had MUCH more traction

the factory auto is NOT difficult to wire if youve got ANY idea
( i havnt but sixworks has)

i fucking wish to get 220 rwkw you will need twin pipes 16 psi big FMIC ,fuel system mods(lean it out a bit) a 3.5 inch system or a punched cat . a damn good cold air system . and a few tricks Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy not that i know any Razz

your not far off but at 12 psi your looking at about 175 rwkw and thats with twin pipes .more like 160 without

Just look at the results of the last toymods dyno day

a full budget and how to do is on my webpage link below

Finally manual for burnouts drifting etc or for fun!!

Auto to go faster...MUCH faster about 1/2 second 0-100

I would like to add to celicamads comments.
Everyting he said is true, but one point of clarification.
ONLY the jzx81 will be a straight bolt in to a mx83. A jzx90 is not the same and does require alot of custom stuff, like both engine and gearbox crossmembers need to be modified or refabricated plus heaps of other stuff.

ps I have a jzx90 1jz in my mx83 and it has ended up costing me about $7k + car, using standard exhaust and gtr intercooler.

Drop me an email if you want to know what is required to put a jzx90 1jz into an mx83.

Please DONT listen to people who tell you that all chaser models are the same. A JZX81 is *NOT* the same as a JZX90.

Do the conversion though, its worth every cent.

Sorry to Hijack the thread, but I (with some friends help) am about to embark on a 2JZ conversion for my MX83 Grande.

Anyone here experienced enough to be able to (and willing to) take on the re-wiring job ?? - (or able to supply a wiring diagram) - I am not expecting it for free, if you are interested/capable - please PM me.

Also, if anyone wants to offer any other advice or assistance in regards to this conversion, I am all ears.

Cheers
Jason

Hello,

I am putting a 1JZ-GTE into a MX-73 Cressida and here are a few problems we have come accross..

* Requires custom engine mounts
* Requires custom gearbox mounts
* The standard dash is cable and the new is electronic
* The cost keeps on going up every few mins when another problem is found.
* The battery has been moved to the boot
* There is minimal room between the engine and cooling fan
* The computer requires the fluid cooling fan.
* The tailshaft needs to be shortened and strengthened
* A few small mounts need to be made for the cooling reserve, power steering, engine computer, etc.

All these small things add up to a bit of a headache. But should be worth it once the thing is running.

We used a JZX-90 Chaser for the doner.

Cheers,
MX73-1JZ

MX83's have a G series diff, the same as JZA70 Supras... so yes it will be fine.
