URGENT: 1GGTE/W58/clutch help! Thu, 20 March 2003 04:53 Go to next message
Okay, the first thing that I have to say is NEVER RELY ON ANYONE and NEVER ASSUME THAT A WORKSHOP KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. I don't ever take anything to a workshop unless I can't do it myself, and in the case of rebuilding a clutch that's a bit out of my league.

So, I had the clutch uprated, etc and a new throwout bearing supplied. This is where the problem came in. I got the new bearing and carrier home and it didn't fit onto my fork. "Damn" said I.

Took the thing back and the guy was quite confused. Apparently there are a number of different types of throwout bearing, fork and carrier setups for W58's. The problem we have is that the nard threw out my old bearing, carrier and retaining spring, and I have NOOOO idea what it looked like (I have taken photos of every part of the conversion EXCEPT the old bearing). The only thing I have is the fork from the 1G W58 which I know must be right as that's what was on it. So I have to find a bearing and carrier to suit.

Below is a picture of the fork... does anyone know what the bearing and carrier should look like? Anyone got a pic? Or can anyone take one? I can't get my car running until I find out!

Puh puh puh please?

Note the cast clutch fork type rather than the pressed type that I thought came on most W58's (only the ones I've had apparently).

Ok.
You really should find yourself the pressed steel throw out fork, cos the cast iron one doesn't fit quite right with the 1g clutch and bell housing..

In addition, I have purchased 3 different thrust bearings, all of which were different, however all of them seem to work ok. I think I can get you a photo of one of them though.. I'll just ask the guy I know who has the other one. I have found down here (melbourne) that it's very easy to find a thrust bearing and carrier..

email me at stradlater@hisplace.net if you have any further info.
put TOYMODS in the topic when you do.
I'd be happy to help
