celica: should i? Thu, 20 March 2003 05:46 Go to next message
upon entering a certain campbelltown workshop i noticed an old celica, i thought TA22 but i dont know the difference. it said LT 2000 so does that mean it was an RAxx? anyway, it was in VERY good original condition appart from some front end damage, mainly a buckled bonnet, guard and bar. it had no motor, and appart from being under an inch of dust the original white paint was quite clean. i spoke with the owner of the shop and he said i can have it for $750 after i offered $1000. not bad i thought.
this car would be for my girlfriend as she has been nagging me for YEARS for a celica like this.
so my question is: should i get it and will it be worth the money? if i got it i was thinknig of leaving it unregistered for a while longer and put in a 4age. is this a relatively easy swap for an apprentice mechanic? i have a spare sprinter full of spares such as gear box and clutch and whatever. but could i get it fixed, registered, and converted to a 4age for under say... $6G?
thanks in advance!

i would have offered 500 to start but it all depends on what the car actually looks like, i.e. interior tears or rips etc. has to be something really good to offset the front end damage

LT 2000 = 2litre = 18R = RA23

perhaps you should consider using the 2litre 1G ?

18RG head would go on nicely if you don't want to transplant an engine...

It could be an RA28, Hatch or boot back there???? If the rest of the car is in good nic, it is probably worth buying.

i think its got a boot not hatch. the interior was pretty good, sorta a red vinal or something? did i mention it was auto? but this isnt a problem easy fixed.

rob_RA40, whats is the 1G? you dont mean the 1GGE do you? thats a 6 yes? id prefer a 4 cyl for petrol reasons and non forced induction due to insurance and becuase its a chics car before anyone suggests a 3TGTE. and shes a nutcase driver.
so thats a no to the 4AGE aswell? id prefer EFI to carby but if a carby can be done cheaper and easier with similar performance thats ok too.

My 1G-GTE drinks 7.1L/100km on the freeway and 10.7L/100km while being thrashed around town.

I drove to Canberra and back this week (also drove around Canberra all week) on one tank of petrol. That's 565.8km using 50.82L. 8.98L/100km.

I don't think you need to worry about fuel consumption with the 1G. A 2.0L six is still the same capacity as a 2.0L four.

how hard is it to put in a 1G then? would it be easier than a 4A? what gearbox do you use with it and does that bolt up?

Dewd, there's a shitload of information on the main site and on the forums about the 1G swap. Just do a search.

It's the best bang for your buck option. As long as you have an xA23. It won't fit in a TA22.

just read the articles... the 1G conversion doesnt seem any harder than a 4A but seems more expensive.
can the wiring loom obtained with the 1G be used straight in the celica or does it need to be rewired?

im in eagle vale, yeah i put the engine in with my old man, and did everything else other than the wiring, zorst and fuel system which was done by a performance shop, but later on i put in a EFI fuel tank and pump in to get rid of the shoddy surge tank (ie fuel bomb) in engine bay.

ive also got wiring diagrams for the 1G-GE.

Wiring is a cut and shut job. You can't just plug it in to the Celica.

The 1G swap is much easier than a 4A swap. And I reckon it'd be cheaper too.

oz_craig, be careful what you say i might take you up on that. Smile after installing my gze into my sprinter im not keen on wiring. it was already out of a sprinter and all pluged in and i still hated it.
