home-made metal head gasket? Sun, 23 March 2003 03:07 Go to next message
Has anyone made their own metal head gasket? No one seems to make them for the 18R so I was thinking of making my own. Some of the aftermarket gaskets are made of "deadsoft copper" so I thought I could get some and try it. Does anyone see any problems with this?

You mustn't be trying very hard if you can't find a headgasket for an 18R...

Well, the reason I want to use a metal gasket is because I have a very limited budget, but I want to figure out how to engineer and turbocharge an engine without a kit. Since I have several 18R's around, I figured I could use them as a test bench. I can afford to blow a couple up while I figure it out. I have found head gaskets, but not metal ones.

Try Ridgecrest Engineering:

It probably won't cost you any more than $100 for a copper headgasket. This really isn't something you want to experiment with at home; if the cylinder head doesn't seal, your engine won't run properly (at best) or will be permanently damaged (at worst).
