What sort of fluid should I use for the w58 Gearbox, where should it be filled from and how much does it take?

It takes about 3.8L of a synthetic fluid that can handle a LSD. if you use non LSD oil you could destroy it. I use Syntrax by Castrol 85W/90 and as far as i am aware it is the only non-genuine oil.

Syntrax by Castrol 85W/90
it takes about 2lt to fill / replace it.
you fill it from the side of the box.
19-21 mm filler plug passenger side from memory

Just curious, has anyone filled a W58 through the gearlever? Usually easier than trying to get the damn filler plug out while lying under the car and then spilling oil everywhere while trying to fill it.

I always fill from the gear lever, it's much easier. You just have to be careful not to spill any of that stinky gear oil on your carpet!

I always fill through the gearstick hole, and if I don't know how much to put in leave the check plug out, slowly pour it in, and wait till oil comes out the hole Very Happy

As for mixing ATF/gear oil, do you find it helps the shift? Last manual box I did (not a toyota) I used all ATF with some auto trans additive - worked WONDERS for shift quality. However, I'd be sceptical of using too much ATF in a highly stressed box - preferably stick to a basic type gear oil, preferably also avoiding synthetics and anything too thin, after seeing what they do to a lot of diffs!
