Hi
im putting some 6x9's into the rear of my celica there is no way that they are going to fit without cutting up the metal structure. I was wondering if anyone has done this or how much this would effect the cars structural integrity. Should i just start chopping away?
thanks

I put 6x9's in my TA22 ages ago... I just made spacers out of MDF to mount the speakers an inch or so above the parcel shelf, which was enough to make them fit in the existing holes in the parcel shelf. I wouldn't recommend cutting, it would be a total bitch to get in there.

I put some in my RA28, but put them where the old speakers in the rear passanger area trim was. There used to be some odd cup holder type things there. I took those out, made up a bit of MDF to hold the 6x9s and fitted there. Worked well and no cutting was required.
Cheers

the only problem with these speakers is that they have a large structure the magnet circumference is about 4- 4.5 inches by itself. so im building up some pods but the magnets still stick out the bottom and the only way i can see it happening is by going at it with a hacksaw blade (yay ). so what im really asking is will cutting up the metal in the parcel shelf really stuff up my car's rigidity? i have heard that it can.
Norbie: sis you put the speakers in the 4x6 factory holes or did you put them in the next ones along with the fuel lines in the way?

Yeah I put em in the 4x6 holes.
I don't think cutting the parcel shelf will have a significant impact on structural integrity provided you don't go overboard. If you just want to make the holes a bit bigger that shouldn't be a problem at all.

just to let you know - when i was a car radio installer, we were strickly NOT ALLOWED to cut metal in the rear parcell shelf. RTA said it was illegal and we would get busted.
That said, if its just a small amount im sure its ok

Why put 6x9's in unless you have already purchased them. I had a set of supposedly top sony ones in my car and they didnt preform real well at all. I now hava a set of 6 inch clarions and a small sub in the boot much better sound with no hole cutting. The parcel rack is actually classed as a structural part of that car and adds to the stiffness of the shell etc.
But everybody cuts holes in them so each unto his own i say.

I put 6x9"s into my ra40 coupe but I guess its the same in any car, I just made a new parcel tray/shelf out of MDF as the original wasn't much good anyway. The MDF is think enough to raise the metal base of the speakers so that it fits nicley into the holes already there.
As for top quality I have $70 Dominator speakers and I love'em.

I completely agree with this...I also have an ra40 and ended up cutting the crap out of the metal...thinking back MDF would have been a better idea
Otherwise why not consider smaller speakers...or a set of good splits???

thanks for the replies guys/girls i am going to cut a 4 inch by 1.5 inch semi circular hole which will not cut into the baby restraints. i will probably weld some reinforcing to the bottom but that means i get to take out the petrol tank yay! lucky me.
how illegal is this u guys/girls wont tell will you? lol
thanks

well illegal is illegal, but so is putting an aftermarket air filter on, so I won't start on that one.
My advice, and I know it is not worth much, is to get rid of the 6x9's and find something that fits. Don't go cutting up a car just to fit some speakers in. There are pleanty of other ways to get the sound you want without stuffing up your car.
If you really want the 6x9's in your celica go with what joel suggested and stick them in the rear side panels. I am not sure about the 23's but the 28's have a big hole there. I had a 10in. sub in each side at one stage, so some 6x9's will certainly fit.
As far as stiffness goes, the celica's aren't too stiff to start with, so why make it worse.

To cut the holes you could use an airsaw, if you have acess to one. the hacksaw blade will really suck-ass.

i just bought a car which had holes cut into the parcel tray for 6x9s, so i bought some 6x9s, thinking it was all good, so i then pulled out the tray and found the gapping butchery that someone had done to the metal under the parcel tray.
looks bad.. so i just chucked the tray back on... and never thought about it since...
