4AG 20 Valve into KE70 Thu, 27 March 2003 01:08 Go to next message
Can anyone tell me the steps involved with putting a 20 valve 4age into a ke70 corrola sedan. i am thinking of doing this conversion but i want to know how hard it is. i am planing to put a shortend hilux diff in the back with a 4.11 lsd center and running a sprinter gearbox. do you think this is a good combo or should i use a Supra steel case instead.

any help is most appreciated

u can start with a AE71 cross memeber

from there i havent a clue, search the forums and tech articles for RWD 20valve conversions.

i considered a similar conversion not too long ago. Since the engine was deisgned as east west only, all the water pumps/housings and dizzy and stuff is all at the back of the motor, which makes life difficult for fitment into a RWD car. But not impossible.
Anthony Kellam in brisbane has some bolt on parts that overt this crisis using coil pack and some new water housings (so they dont point striaght into the firwall. He is probably the best to talk to on this conversion. You will find him on the www.twincam16.com forums Smile

since this sounds like a fairly time cosuming conversion, what can i do to the 4K-C motor to get it to go a bit harder cause let me tell you that this thing sucks

Personally I say don't waste your money on a 20v as they're very underpowered ($$ per horsepower). If you must persist with an A-series engine then the 4AGZE is the only choice. If you're wanting to stay atmo then you're probably just as well going for the 16v 4AGE - no they're not as powerful as the 20v but they're about 3/4 the performance and 1/4 of the price.

As for the K series engine I can't help you, but the thing is never going to be fast if it's got an engine like that in it.

My personal opinions of the 20V are widely distributed on these forums, so ill stick to options I think are most suitable to the car.

with a 16V 4AGE you only need the AE71 cross member to fit the engine...but then youll need the gearbox to drive it....so you may as well go find a complete cheap AE71, theyre cheap enough to make it about the same as buying the engine and gearbox seperately and fitting it to your own car, plus you wont have to buy the clutch master and slave and fit it all as well, oh and then youll need the AE71 pedal box to suit the clutch master as the KE70 uses a cable driven pedal box.

A 4age will give you very nice power for the KE70 and is easily able to be improved upon relatively cheaply with cams, computers etc.

however if you really want some power ( and a big bill for engineering) then go for a GZE, its pretty much a similar conversion but you will have to reconsider the diff as the stock Borg Warner will not be up to task.

if you want to persist with a 20V then good luck, youll find all sorts of nigley little issues to make it a painfull project IMHO. Things like the firwall needing to be massaged and fixing the water flow issues are just the start. Personally if youre going to go to that much trouble I would do a 3SGE conversion instead.

Oh and dont forget if youre going to put the 4A into the KE70 youll need an engineering certificate as well because you breach the 15% capacity rule
