I am currently lame (i own a ford) and am looking to get a less lame car. at the moment i am considering getting a AW11 MR2 or a MA-61 Supra, now i can either get the mr2 and not be able to do any mods to it, or i can go for the supra and have some money to make changes. i am interested to know about the pros and cons of each such as fuel economy, ease of modification and stuff??

The supra shape looks pretty good with the flared wheel arches, but may not be as good a drive as the(newer)MR2 . The bigger bonnet space will come in handy later then you win the lottery and convert to 7m or JZ power!

These are vastly different cars - I suggest you take both for a test drive and see which you prefer.
Keep in mind that if practicality is an issue at all, the Supra wins hands down - it has seating for 4 (admittedly the back seats are small, but they do exist) and a large cargo area. The MR2 on the other hand doesn't even pretend to have a back seat, and cargo area is a joke.

Oh, and there is a tad more room in the front of the Supra too. I've only sat in one AW11 before, but compared to my car it felt like I'd stepped into a coccoon.

I'm with frank. While the MR2 will out-handle the supra every day of the week, the supra just has so much more. More engine bay space, more occupant space, 2+2 seater, a real boot (not the handbag holder of the MR2) The mr2 is nice, but too restrictive in so many ways

Depends what you mean by out-handle. Sure, the MR2 may throw the Supra (stock) off through the twisties, but on faster corners I know which car I'd rather be driving. Plus, how you gonna manage big power oversteer in an MR2?

generally speaking the MR2 will win, having ebtte weight ratios. sure the supra has a couple of advantages .. but around a racetrack, given same HP, I'd take the MR2 (well actually I'd take the supra coz I love that car, but if I wanted to win I'd take the MR2)

You are neglecting one thing though, say same hp, they each had 200kW. You could achieve that in Mk2 Supra by a few ways, lets take what I'm going to do, 1UZFE. To do this in an MR2, you'd probably need to throw a bit of money and make a 4AGTE.
Fair enough, the 4A has the same power, and less weight, but which one is going to biting at its arse down the straight because of just masses of torque everywhere?

Drive them both and see which one you like. I can't really agree with the sentiments that the MR2 has no room in the front. I'm 6 foot tall and weight ~135KG and this is one of the best fitting sporty cars I have been able to find it has much more room than a skyline or silvia.
The MR2 is by far the more involving and enjoyable drive especially in standard form. If you want cheap mods then it gets a bit complicated, you can do a 4AGZE conversion reasonably cheaply but this doesn't give the kind of potential that a 1JZ conversion would for future cheap performance.
THis one is really a matter of taste. For me it's all about the mid engine balance and handling of the MR2. I know I won't be buying another front engine car for a long time, which pisses me off since the car I have always wanted and is now affordable for me and R32 GTR is front engine. Oh well I guess I'll just have to get that 4AGZE and a NEVO pulley and play with the handling bliss that is an MR2.

I never said it was too small, I just said I felt like I was in a cocoon! It fitted fine, but I just preferred something that offered a little more room as well as fitting nice

Hmmm.. Well.. I could go all out here.. BUT I WONT!..
Having driven both cars... A Standard 4age mr2.. would fucking leave a 5me supra for dust.. and i have done it.. On a rolling start also.. As for the mr2 being like a cocoon?.. hmmm.. ITS SUPPOSED TO!!.. Why do you think they put the console up there.. Personally.. I have yet to drive a car that makes you feel more In the car than on top of it.. And whats with the "bolted on" wheel arches? Hmmmm... SLR-MA61??? You CANNOT throw a Ma61 round a corner like an mr2.. i dont care what you say.. YOU CANT FIGHT PHYSICS! The mr2's have space.. Maybe not heaps.. But they are a Sports car.. Not a freakin Sports barge.. Hmmm.. why do all the exotics put the engines in the rear? Cause unless you drive in a straight line from Point A to Point B.. Thats where they Belong

Heheh.. thats enough ranting.. I actually would like a ma61 for a project car.. hmmm.. 1uz.. But that would be it.. The mr2 is an excellent Everyday machine.. Hell i gotta outta my old car (n14 SSS) and into the mr2.. The sss felt like a boat compared.. Just drive an mr2.. I garentee you will see the light.. And if your commenting on the handling between the two.. and havnt driven both.. Dont comment.. Cause there is a HUGE Difference.. And now with the GZE and LSD.. Hmmmm.. Tasty.. i tells ya that much.

You will have to weight up your needs first. The type of driving you will do will also dictate your choice.

Dude, take a chill pill. I never said the Supra was a faster car, far from it, 5ME is a slug...jeez
All I said was I didn't like the cabin of a MR2, that was just an opinion.
As for the mid-engined car thing...umm, derr, its called a low polar moment, thats what happens when you mash all the heavy parts of the car towards the centre. It gives the car quick turn-in etc. It also makes them harder to control if it gets sideways.
I'm not trying to start an argument here, we have enough of those... ie. 2T vs. 4A, Celica vs Sprinter etc. I just gave an opinion.
If you bought the MA61, you could spend some money on some new suspension to take advantage of the nicely balanced car it is.
BTW, if you havent guessed, I'm planning the UZA61 creation

Personal Preferences are what counts the most.
I prefer a compromise between comfort and handling etc...
My next car will be an MA61, hopefully UZA-61. Least that car won't fall to pieces on me (Looks angrily at AZ92)
