2)drivability. (not stupidly quick, can still handle)

ok, so I'm slightly biased 
good car handling wise, decent power... and reliability wise, as long as you use good coolant (toyota long life) the engine is reliable (not that I'd be keeping the stock one!)

1. Do a full service, replace ALL fluids, change timing belt, check all engine mounts, check exhaust system, check all other major mounts are tight, steering, suspension, etc. Check brake pads.
2. Get new tyres and a wheel alignment. Maybe some new shocks and struts too. Make sure tyres are at correct pressure.
