If you have a knock sensor, i thought that it should technically be impossible to hear any pinging because the knock computer will retard the timing well before it starts to get serious? wanna crank the boost on my 3t-gte, but worried about knock, will the knock computer take care of my worries? if i do plug it up alittle to high?

from what i know about knock-sensors they take a few seconds to work(ie detect knock then wind back timing)so a certain level of knock can be heard (i wouldnt rely on this as a safety measure though) also are you sure that your knock sensor is working correctly, if its not working 100% i could see engine busting issues arising.

No they don't take a few seconds to work. They are very very fast at retarding the timing. They sample over 50 times a second to see if there is detonation.
Problem is, they are only used in closed loop control. When you are giving your throttle a wallaping the ecu is running in open loop and relies on pre-determined ignition values.
So the timing is running of fixed values, if you lean out, have a bad batch of fuel, etc etc it will still detonate.
