this is the guidelines posted somewhere else, let me know if anyone's interested, and we can talk about the price...
I'm looking for about high$5k - low$6k with 4 wheel disc brakes, clutch & full 20v conversion (header, exhaust etc of coz...) and about $2k more for suspension & wheel, $1k more for paint, but generally fairly negotiatable as long as the buyer shows genuine interest, and is generally a nice guy/gal, (u know how annoying some car buyers are... )
please email me if interested, as this bboard gets fairly confusing after a few replies...

lol 20yr old car that would have to be one to be one of the best 4cyl car's ever made .. i dont think there is anything today that could even come close to its "price, performance, engine capacity, powertowieght ratio's, etc .." comapred to when it was first introduced.
my 2cents on "its a 20yr old car"

There's lots of ways to look at what its worth devilrolla.
redbook.com.au is an authority, and one of the ways.
ultimate chaos pointed out "it" is one of the best 4cyls ever made... but remember that if you are paying a premium as a collector, to distinguish accordingly between it being Collectable, or not, else when you field what its worth in the future, you'll be disappointed.
For example an Australian AE86 Sprinter was arguably the worst spec AE86 to any country (Toyota has historically given us the the dregs).
This example of the Sprinter is far from the Australian spec, and so must be valued accordingly. When it comes to being a collector however, the physical upgrades are significantly devalued.
When not looking at an AE86 as a collectors car, you are comparing it to anything else in that price range, and you'll find thats why people say off the cuff "its 20years old". Thats where I think ultimatechaos' comparison of the AE86 being better than anything today somewhat fragile.
Club4AG has a good intro/primer in their Forum FAQ section if I recall correctly.
The AE86 Sprinter's situation is similar to that of Mazda 808 Coupe's situation. The up-specced jap/performance RX3 Coupe/Savannah is in high demand/short supply, so people are converting to rotary engines and crossmembers, upgrading axles, brakes, tail lights, trims, dash... and when it comes to being a collectable, its just a "faker" (eg Falcon GTHO fake $20k vs identical authentic $40k) and are judged on a different level.
Same with Mini Cooper's, Redbook reflects the collectors value of the Cooper/S's... however if you look at a Sprinter, its not the collectors item, and its value isnt reflected so. This has insurance repercussions, which club4AG primer post also raises.
I'm sure you could go on and on with examples, but its something to keep in mind.
I'm currently looking for an AE86 of any description (have a post WTD: Perth AE86...) so have these things at the front of my mind.
I hope it helps.

if you see old ladies in them, approach them and ask them if they are interested in selling, as your friend has the same car and you'd like to restore it... or something smooth like that.
check out redbook.com.au for ballparks...
I hope it doesnt get to the boosting stage!

The sprinter IS the best 4 cylinder. A standard 4ac engine will keep going forever. My bro's clocked up about 350 000k's with no major work done to the engine. Unreal I reckon.

devilrolla...i wouldn't spend more than 4.500 on a 4age sprinter aus spec...u'd be better of picking up a cheap 4ac for 1k and doing it up...4age engines are no more than 1000, plus u can restore it urself for free ^_^!

haha _Why_ have u had a look at whats done to this car?
its not just a stock sprinter with 16v 4age in it
if the body is in good condition id say he would be looking for $6k easily with everything there
id say more like 7k

hehe 4ac sprinter for 1k??? hahahaha not many of them around unless rooted with rust
more like 2k at least if u shop around lots
1k for 4age yeah, but then install it exhaust, wiring etc.
then suspension, breaks
it all ads up
and I can garantee it will be cheaper to buy it already done

thanks for the interest guys, I'm quite busy this week so there's a lot of emails I haven't replied yet, but I'll try to do it tonight or tomorrow night (can't arrange to have the car seen until this weekend anyway)...
to me, the "20 years old" Sprinter is priceless, but people would only appreciate it if they really LOVE driving, there's nothing that could match it in size, power/weight, and the rwd layout, (the next closest is like the s13 which is 1150kg and it's not even close! Too long and wide and heavy!)
Car is a car, as long as it's reliable, drivable, no rust, fun to drive, good handling, doesn't matter how old they are! And the Sprinter looks better than many cars in the 90s anyway!

_Why_ don't want to insult ur opinion either but seriously do some maths.... its all primary school stuff of addition.
you looked at costs involved in a 20v conversion?? how bout how much suspension parts cost?
Point me to a sprinter in any sort of decent condition for 1k??????
Ur friend might of been very lucky, but basing anything on what one person picked up as a great deal doesn't mean anything.
I nearly got a gze sprinter for 8k with similar stuff, but a guy got in the night before me and travled down from qld....
id say 7k is very reasonable
just my 2c

I bought that car from him about 6 weeks or so ago. He only owned it for 2 months.
At the beginning, I was merely trying to buy a small light RWD car to do a bit of weekend club work in. I certainly could not afford to spend any more than $8000. I really wanted to spend about $5k. What are your choices? An MX5 is too much money. An RX7 is a rotary (not my cup of tea), a Datto 1600 or an Escort is a bit too old. Although I love European cars and know much more about them than Jap cars, they are too expensive to get real power out of. That ruled out Alfa's, BMW's, Fiat's (yes I am that stupid) ect ect. The Sprinter is a logical choice.
You are kidding yourself if you think you can build one cheaper than buying one done. No doubt about it.
A guy I know just sold one in Brisbane to a guy in Sydney for $9500. It was on the market for about a week.
Cheers,
Cal.
