Haltech + 4AGZE Mon, 31 March 2003 06:35 Go to next message
this is gonna be long but here goes...

i bought a smashed sprinter about half a year ago with a 4agze and haltech E6A computer. although there was front end damage the motor was fine. when i got the car home it would not idle it had to be reved abouve 2000rpm so as not to stall but above those revs it seemed fine.
last week i finally finished transplanting the motor into another sprinter and the motor idled fine and seemed to run great. because the computer had been disconnected for such a long time i assumed it had lost its memory and was running on base settings alone. the fact that the tacho also would not go past 2000rpm also made me think the computer had been reset back to factory settings and wasnt recognising the dual coil packs.
this mourning i brough in my laptop along with a disc of about 10 haltech map files with i got when i received the car. my theory was, put the last modified file into the haltech and it would be setup the way the previous owner had the car running.
now heres the bad part: i put into the haltech the most recent maps and the car would not idle below 2000rpm just like when i first got the car. i tried most of the maps i had on disc, all of with fouled the plugs and needed to be recleaned before trying each map.

so when i first ran the car, was i actually on base settings or was that the last programed map in the computer? how could the car possibly run fine after installation but not when it was in the old car, remembering it was still intact in every way? i reloaded the base setings into the haltech and it wouldnt even start, so the maps first in the haltech must not have been the base settings but a proper map, but why then isnt it on the disc of maps the previous owner gave me and why did the motor do the same thing it did in the old car when i put in the most recently modified maps?

i know this is very long and complicated but im desperate and need some help, possibly someone with experience with haltechs or other engine management. im stumped because all the fuel and ignition maps seem fine, plus it is definately set up correctly ie the haltech is programmed for 4cyl, dual ignition coil, 3 bar map sensor etc...

I doubt whether it would revert to a base map with the battery disconnected, even for an extended period of time, and even if it had, your 4AGZE would not run, cause the engine setup pages would be WAAAAY incorrect, not even close to your setup as far as ignition configuration etc.

I could send you a map from mine, but its for 550cc injectors, so it would be way too lean. The crank angle sensor setup is pretty fiddly too.

out of interest, what ignitor modules does your motor use with the haltech?

Cheers
Phil

Save yourself some hassle and get the thing properly tuned - don't do what I did and hang a rod out the block!

im such a spaz for playing with it in the first place, shoulda saved file already in the car dammit! but how could it magically run good after i put it in the new sprinter when nothing changed? wierd. and yes its impossible to run it from base settings but i didnt know that at the time.
in regards to the ignitor module, its a haltech one if im on the right track as to what your talking about. it connects to the crank angle sensor and the main computer. its a little box that says haltech. if i had a digi cam id take a pic but ohwell.

Oz_Craig: yes thats the one, i picked it up for $3000 which i was pretty happy with considering the work done to it. some things are quite rough tho and its cost me a bit more than i thought it would. sily me thought it would just swap over for little cost because it was already in a sprinter. Rolling Eyes

so im gonna need to get it professionaly tuned... can anyone reccomend a decent place that aint too expensive cause damn this thing is eating up my huge apprentice pay packet Sad
should i get the front mount fitted first then get it tuned or would it make little difference.
thanks for your help guys!!!

i already drove it with the bonnet OFF and the intercooler was way hot Smile

well not so much unexpected costs just more like things i didnt think about first.
i upgraded the brakes before i put the motor in which cost a bit, new plugs were $65, timing belt, all new seals, water pump went prob cause the motor was sitting without water for so long, radiator needed flush and repair, crank pulley was cracked and the keyway worn out so needed new pulley and keyway.
there was a few other things, i know most are normal things but im a whinger. plus there was tinting the windows, new speakers and head unit, just fiddly things but they all add up when i only made $210 a week last year and only a little more now.
plus i gotta get the engine tuned, FMIC, alarm installed, engineers, and rego in 2 weeks Confused

i could probably put the FMIC off for a little while considering the previous owner drove it how it was for however long but i dont like the idea of running 14psi throught the stock IC right above the extractors Confused

no! crazy! not that i would either but he went to the trouble of geting pipes made to relocate the cooler so why not front mount? i hope the engine is still alright after being driven with extra boost im worried about detonation.

If it is what i think it is, i had a very similar problem on exactly the same set-up on an off-road race car. Haltech uses a thing called a reluctor adapter which converts the signal from the crank angle sensor into a form the E6A can read. This proved to be the weak link and caused all sorts of tuning problems.

A fix used on mine was to use the guts out of a Pulsar distributer and throw away the reluctor adaptor. I have this set-up on a silver top 20 valve running the same ECU and it runs faultlessly.

For tuning, I used a guy running out of a factory next to the Australian VW Performance Centre in Croydon (vic). He has good experience in running Haltech computers and was the one who sorted out the problems with mine.

I hope this has helped. Smile

Re: Haltech + 4AGZE Thu, 24 April 2003 09:41 Go to previous message
you used a distributor and got rid of the coil packs?
ive had adam from haltech tune my car quickly just so i can drive it but it doesnt idle cold and runs rich (which was on prupose due to it being better than running lean for the mean time) and will have him give it a proper tune after i get a cooler.
as far as i know there arent any problems with the CAS and the car ran faultlessly before. one thing that sucks is my tacho doesnt work need one of those converter thingos.
