MK3 Supras Tue, 18 June 2002 02:27 Go to next message
OK guys,
im looking into mk3 supras.
something about em i like, so my 33 is for sale.
just a few questions though

i want a 1jzgte aerotop in manual.
now i see a few aerotops with 7mgte do they share the same engine mounts as the 1jz? so i can unbolt one and bolt in the other.
also most aerotops are auto, whats the cost roughly of converting it to manual?
any info u guys have is much appreciated.
thanks.

ma71 supras did come out with manual and targa roofs. but none of them came out with 1jz's (that i know of). im pretty sure jza70's came out with targa tops but i havent seen to many. most people prefer the sunroof as it offers more structural reliability. i would not bother with an auto to manual conversion. my sugestion is that if you do not find a 1jz manual with a targa roof is to get a 7m powered supra and fit a 1j but i dont think the engine mounts are the same.

ps: why not fit a 2j if you can afford it.

The later generation Mk3's had round fluid filled mounts so a 1jz will bolt up to them. However I don't know if everything else is in the right spot under the bonnet. I did an early non-turbo MA70 to 1jz-gte conversion using a JZA-70 front cut and had to use the power steering and engine fan reseviours from the JZA-70 because they were in the wrong spot. Many little things like this were different from the MA to the JZA, and the front cut was essential.
The manual front cut was very hard to find and cost more than an auto. I was going from manual to manual so this bit was easy. But the clutch master cylinder from the JZA was required.
JZA-70's did come in a targa-top. However they are rumoured to not be as strong as the hardtop.
The 1jz motor is pretty quick. Despite the effort involved it was all worthwhile........

LOL - "I can unbolt one and bolt in the other" - it all sounds so easy...

Yep, the targa is good for cruising, but you get a bit of "scuttle shake" while punting it on bumpy roads. It's a little disconcerting at first, but you got to know what you want out of the car, and what faults will at niggle you. My targa top Auto (original import) JZA-70 will do me fine - I'm too lazy to shift the gears (the auto probably shifts faster than I could anyway). Also, you get a more reliable launch.

I don't think I've seen aerotop JZA-70's in manual trans though.

There are people in WA who were importing them from Japan. They may have some still, or may be able to help you. I think they are called "Melville Auto Imports" - look up their telephone using White Pages on the net. It would certainly save you heaps of trouble unless you like doing conversions.
