Airbox Modification with pic Tue, 01 April 2003 10:53 Go to next message
I was talking to people some time back about cold air intakes and air box modifications so i thought i would share this little mod.

MA61 Supra airbox meets the angle grinder. Im running a K&N stock size filter in this modded box (which has a larger filter area than a pod) and the box is surrounded by a heat shield, which seals against the bonnet. Also running a 4 inch cold air intake to front bar.

Pic at www.geocities.com/ifli4u/airbox.jpg

Lost a bit of low end torque esp in 3rd gear, however the top end gains were pretty noticeable!

The cost, well the filter was $130, heat sheild material $7 from clark rubber and the use of a 4 inch angle grinder. About $20 if u need to hire one.

Just thought id post this if anyone was interested

I'm into these airbox mods. I want to do one that surrounds my pod filter.

The lexus site does a good one, step by step.

Yeah that looks the goods, id say that mine is probably 90% sealed, but if i could seal the box it would work better of course Very Happy

But this mod cost $7 dollars considering i already had the pipe, angle grinder and filter, by this stage.

If i do go ahead with the planned conversion ill be making a custom airbox 100% sealed with a pod, best of both worlds.

Until then this will work fine because this airbox design is a prick to work with!

I can only sort of picture what you have done, but, where you have the seal around the bonnet, would it be feasible to stick some insulation on the bonnet that covers the area above the filter?

Bonnets get hot of course, and it might help. Just an idea.

Yes its a good idea, but i dont want to seal it in like that, too hard to access.

i wish i had a pic of the one on my old car, made it outof aluminium and glued the thing in, with a foam strip to seal against the bonnet, 02 rush pod filter fed by a 4 inch cold air intake, the whole thing was sealed!

In winter the thing sounded like a jet turbine winding out!! It made a massive difference!!!

This was all in an effort to prevent buying a pod filter!

The new engine will get a pod though and a sealed box Smile

No, I mean stick insulation on the underside of the bonnet in the area above the air filter.

So when you lift bonnet, the insulation goes up with it because it's stuck to the bonnet. Wink
