Advice on 3S-FE

I was wondering if i could get some advice of you guys.
My SV21 Camry is coming up to its 200000Km service and its beginning to burn oil and show signs of blow by (smoky exhaust under load and high revs). It isnt leaking oil, and we have had it since new. I had a word with my mechanic, said i could just run a thicker oil or get a recoe'd engine. Said if i wanted to fix it or get a new engine, its gonna cost me over $2000
Im just wondering whether its worth having my car fixed, or cutting my losses and selling it.
Ive done all the basic mods, filter, exhuast, susp and tyres. Be a shame to see my first car go
Or, could this be a good excuse to drop a 3S-GE and a manual box in...
Thanks for ure help

i thought a smokey engine in those conditions was from bung valve seals or something.
if your selling theres definatly a market for them, although i bought mine for $4000, it was going to go on the yard for $7000.
i often toy with the idea of a better engine but what brings me down to earth is that i would have to upgrade suspension, brakes and other gear to handle the extra power, when it would prolly be quicker, easier and cheaper to just get an mr2 or celica with that extra oomph

I did a -ge conversion and it has cost me under 10k incuding the cost of the vehicle. Find out what your engine and loom is gunna cost then multiply by 2.75 times and you'll have an approximate cost (give or take). Your brakes will be fine, upgrade the pads and run better brake fluid, they are more than adequate.

Hey Doctaky,
What car did you do the GE conversion into?

Hey ToyCam,
An engine swap is the easy bit. What is hard it trying to convert the Camry into manual, that would be a real pain.

I've heard the manual conversions are hard, but never actually found out why. I thought that basically you need a pedal set, transmission from the flywheel back. Wouldn't all the mounting points be already be on the car?

on the topic of GE conversions... is it as simple as wacking on a GE head and maybe better cylinders? cause i would think that would be less painless than a full engine swap. i only ask cause i thought the blocks were the same...

You also have to install the gear shift and links. If you can get all the bits off some kind of 3S-GE FWD front cut then the job might be easier.
As far as just swapping heads, unfortunately the S series engines aren't the same as the A series. The oil galleries are different. The way the cams are run is different. I lot of things are different. I think there is an article on the web able the technical difference between the 3S-FE and 3S-GE.

If you can do a GE conversion on a Camry, then go ahead... that's if you can get a half cut of anything later than a 1st series 3SGE. No one brings them in at all and no one crashes SW21 MR2 quick enough so I could put in a GE.
