1GGTE speed sensor? Wed, 02 April 2003 23:03 Go to next message
Okay, getting towards the last of the wiring on my 1G conversion. For now I'm sticking with the factory ECU... need some advice. The 1G/Supra runs a digital dash from the factory, so the speedo cable plugs into a little speed sensor behind the dash that runs back to the ECU and them comes back to the dash again and into the speedo

What I need to know is.. does this just convert the signal from analogue to digital... or is this important to the ECU? Does it adjust timing or fuelling by using the speed sensor in combination with other inputs? Seeing as it has a 180km/h speed limiter, will the car actually run with no sensor, or will it assume that no signal means it's doing over 180 and therefore not allow me to move?

Seem to be a lot of 1G boys on here, anyone done this?

Gidday

The speed sensor serves 3 purposes, its provides for the 180km speed cut, it tells the computer when the engine is at moving with no throttle or stationary with no throttle, and it stops the engine check light coming on.

Sooo

The 180 speed cut is no problem

The no throttle thing is not really a concern - except if you are cruising along the road and remove your foot you can often get a little bip on the throttle from the computer - think it is to stop stalling as the revs drop towards idle.

The engine check light is a pain, it is a diagnositic code to tell you the engine has been reving at 3,000 while stationary - of course you can choose not to connect it or take the globe out - or you could put a cruise control pickup on the tailshaft like I have and feed into the computer. It you only use one magnet you would have to be doing 4X180 for the speed cut to occur and everything else will work as old man toyota made it.

Awesome, thanks for the info. Won't be long before I put a different computer on it (stock one is just to get it in and running so I can drive it for a few weeks to get used to the 70% power increase) so I'm sure I can handle those minor glitches... as long as the car will definitely drive and it won't ping as a result then I'm happy!
