Supra 5 speeds didn't come out with steel cases, if it has one it is a celica 5 speed (still a strong box).
The strongest would be the latest W58 variant out of a 2JZ-GE supra I imagine, unless there's a later variant than this. W58s are easy to pick over the other W5Xs as they have a steel sandwich plate, but you'd still need a big dollop of power to bust an early W55.
There's no writing on the box to tell what it is, only way to tell (besides the steel sandwich plate on a W58) would be to work out the ratios.

Re: Wxx gearbox Sat, 05 April 2003 01:07 Go to previous messageGo to next message
The steel case 5 speed is known as a W50. This was commonly found behind Celicas and Coronas (and also MA45/6/7s). They are the weakest of the lot, but in absolute terms, quite strong. Yesteryear, people used to bolt these up behind Ford 302 and Holden 253 with no issue.
The W55/6/7/8/9 are loosely termed 'Supra 5 speed'. They are of alloy case construction. They look identical apart from the W58, which has a cast iron sandwich plate - the others have alloy ones. The one that comes from the Supra is the W58. They have subtle differences in gearing and there are no external features to tell you which box you have. The only way is to spin the input shaft and count revolutions on the output shaft. Here is a link to a site that provides the gearing info. These are somewhat stronger than the W50 box, and the W58 box is reputedly slightly stronger again. The late model W58 (out of a JZA80 Supra) has a larger input bearing than the earlier W58, and has withstood 600+ rwkW.
These 'Supra 5 speeds' should not be confused with the 'Supra turbo 5 speed', otherwise known as the R154, from the MA70 turbo. These are immediately identifiable from their large size, pull style clutch and exorbitant price tag.
Hope this helps.

the r154 and 6-speed will NOT, but that's not what you'll be getting

the rest will fit (I'm quite sure)

"and with that large price tag comes almost unlimited tolerance for power second only to the 6-speed"

Wastegate off these forums has broken 3x R154's with an essentially standard 7MGTE.... and Martin Donnon broke his with very little horsepower behind his 1JZ (ignore the claims, people it's nowhere near as powerful as the numbers suggest). I don't think the R154 is really that great... even if it is, it's certainly not 5 times as good as the W58 (despite what the price tag suggests this).

No need to beg there Ed!!! j/k Laughing Laughing Laughing
My understanding was W55/57/58 were all directly interchangeable in terms of bellhousings. can anyone else (who has actaully swapped them) confirm this?

I've swapped a W57 and W58 bellhousing, so they are interchangeable. Haven't tried a W55 though.

Yup identical. The clutch slaves sit on opposite sides though (W57 on right, W58 on left). That was what I found at least.

I think its dependent on the car they came out of rather than the actual gearbox itself.

Is there anyway to find out what model a W58 came out of?

You can take a guess based on the shifter position (there are about 4 different types), but apart from that, no.

im not sure how to take that?? Rolling Eyes
sarcasm? or actually, "here, you missed some info" ??

just incase, i didn't intentianally steal the info off your site, someone (perhaps yourself? i cant remember) emailed me a .zip file with that info in it a while ago. i just compiled it with some other stuff that i dug up off some sites, and some emails ive recieved. im just trying to get it all together as i get my own head around the gearboxes Smile

if you dont mind, ive just noticed there's that second page with the 'info' boxes and images... mind if i borrow that too?

im more than happy to link back to your site too if thats where the info orginated from Smile

cheers

Do you happen to know what position comes from what car to give me a rough idea?

Oh damn, Ive been sprung! Someone has finally worked out that my T04S kit at 1.5 bar only makes 120rwkw. Actually, that makes it a damn good match for a 7M! Ha ha. Be nice kids. Laughing

Me and a Mate had his W58 pulled apart today. They are a damn fine gearbox.

The gears are way overbuilt for most of the applications for which they are used.

The only gripe i ahve with them is the cast aluminium selector forks for 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th. There is no hardened face where the selector hub runs on, therefore it was already worn about 0.5 mm. We are going to check a G53 box tomorrow, it may have cast steel selectors.

Other than that i would have no reservations about running one behind something with some power.
