GZE into AE82. Speedo & tacho help Sat, 05 April 2003 13:05 Go to next message
I think i remember Jason P mentioning recently that the speedo in a ae82 will not work once a gze is put in due to the fact that the ae82 has a mechanical speedo cable and the gze works of a magnetic pickup on the gearbox??? i may be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off here, so can u steer me in the right direction please.

i'm also thinking of getting a twincam dash, but the tacho won't work with the gze. how can i overcome this problem or would i be better off buying an aftermarket tacho?

basically what do i need to do to get the speedo and tacho working?

Both speedo and tacho can be made to work.

Speedo - Just take the electronic speedo drive off the gearbox and swap it over with a mechanical one, then just simply put your cable back in. I think the old mechanical one on your box should fit, not 100% sure on that one though.

Tacho - Need to get a converter box. Some people on here sell them.

As for changing to a twincam dash, think you mean cluster?? I think it would be a good idea. Because the carby clusters dont have a check engine light (good for diagnostics). Also I pulled one out of my seca wreck to have a look and it doesnt have a speed sensor on the speedo. I dont know how not having the speed sensor wire hooked up on a gze effects it. I think the check engine light stays on, But if you have a 4ac cluster then you want see it, since you dont have a check engine light Laughing

Another thing is, i plug a carby cluster into my gze, let it run for ages and ages, let thermo kicked in, and the temp gauge read 1/4

Then I plugged a Twincam cluster in and let it run, let thermo kick in, and temp gauge says 1/2. So I THINK the temp gauges are calibrated differently.

So yeh, prob a good idea to get the twincam cluster.

Tim,

from memory the difference between the tacho's are the way the electronic signal is pulsed. In normal 4a the tacho wire is pulsed at 12V, and from the GZE its a low level signal of 5V (or the other way around). Either way there is ALWAYS a mechanism to have your tacho work. Otherwise i have a spare autometer you can buy (from the white '92).
The speedo - yes, the dude above is right. Bolting in a mechanical drive will work, although it MIGHT be an idea to try and get a whole range of them otherwise Mr speedo might be out a fair bit (depends if final gear ratio is different from 4ac to 4agze).

And im still gathering info for you dude. Im going to try to get up there this week or next weekend to have a look at it all

Just had a look at my old gearbox, the speedo drive is heaps different to the gze one. But my ae92 gze cut had a mechanical speedo. So you will prob just have to find one off that. I think only the ae101's had electronic.

We (Sixworks) design and manufacture tacho boosters for just about any car/engine configuration. Our boosters have been used sucessfully on many 4AGZE's to restore the factory tacho to full working order. As yet we do not have a website but would be happy to email you our information and tech data sheets.

Sorry Les, can't help you with the speedo; that's a mechanical issue. I suggest removing the speedo output gear from the 1G box and replacing it with the one from the 22RE. Other than that, if you have changed tire dia. then you will need to get an in-line reducing box. Not who sells these; never needed one myself.
