Hey all, just wondering what oils you use on 4age's? talking about just the simple TwinCam16 with TVIS... Shell Helix Plus any good? cos I've heard some people say Mineral oil is better than Synthetic for older motors?

I've just got a bad oil leak so i'll be buying some new oil sometime soon I think. No No No

mineral oil will never be "better" for an engine than a synthetic. Synthetics are basically clean man made lubricants not a couple million year old rotten plants. It's about the viscosity of the oil, not about mineral vs synthetic. Only use mineral for running in. It also depends on the condition of your engine. The 4AGE is not an "old" motor either.

Mobil 1 is good but only for engines that don't burn oil and are basically newly run in(never use a good synthetic oil to run an engine in. It lubricates the parts too well and they don't wear which is the whole point of running it in)... read this for more info:

EDIT: Some engines(very few indeed) require a specific type of oil but if not specified(in the car's manual) the above rules apply.

EDIT2: STAY AWAY FROM VALVOLINE IT'S RECYCLED SHIT(they collect ppl's used oil and clean it up that's why it always smells burnt)

Nah dude. I'm still on a learning curve when it comes to curve, I'd always heard you are supposed to use mineral oil to run in engines, but I never had an idea why until you explained it! Razz

The best oil to use is running in oil. This is a mineral oil that has no friction modifiers. These are added to most mineral oil and are in all synthetic oil. When used in brand new engines they do not allow the piston rings ro bed into the pistons and cyclinder walls. This means that you do not get the best compression reading and can lead to oil consumption. Friction modifiers are great for run in engines because as there name suggests reduce internal friction by making everything extra slippery

Hope that helps

Brad

Precisely what I've been trying to say... except in nicer and more logical terms. Buy the stuff that is specifically called "running in oil" - for running in only of course, then run Mobil 1 or other good oil. and change it about every 5000 to 7000km. change the filter every 5000km. Or get Asoil, it's pretty much the best out there and you only need to change it every 20000km. this from a guy who races and uses amsoil and sends them samples of his used oil for analysis. They worked out that around 20k km is about perfect. Filter every 5000 though.

How do you propose to change the filter every 5000 km, but oil only every 20k kms? Won't the oil be lost if the filter is removed? In which case you might as well change the oil, and not leave particles/sediment at the bottom of the engine? Just a thought ...

(Dedicated Mobil 1 user, every 5000 kms for 4AGE)

Your oil sits in the sump and only a little of it in the filter itself. You shouldn't lose too much oil when changing the filter, and the filter should be trapping all the crap in the oil(which there shouldn't be too much of in a properly done engine) And considering the amsoil is expensive as all phuck it works out about the same price as changing Mobil 1 every 5,000km. Which is what you should do with Mobil 1. But as i said, the guy i know sends his oil in for analysis after 20,000km and it's still good and clean, just due for a change for the hell of it. Amsoil actually recommend a change every 30,000km.

But yeah, if you wanna play it safe, do it every 5,000km. just use Mobil 1 then cause it works out about the same price and does the same job if changed more frequently.

raistlin, this Amsoil enthusiaust doesn't race a Datsun 240Z in SA does he?
Because I know of someone who is an Amsoil distributer - uses a very fine filter and only changed the oil when he "refreshed" his engine! After 3 years of racing!

nah, a guy in newcastle and waiting to change oil after 3 years of racing is just silly... should change about every 2 races if not every race...

He should definitely change it more often especially if he is an amsoil distributor. Should be able to get it pretty cheap!
