Hello, i'm debating buying a Camry for a daily driver/commuting car. I know nothing at all about these except that some came with the 3sge?
I want a 4cyl for ecconomy.. Cruise control & Air would be nice.
Anyone know what model these were, or what are the better models?
Cheers

I dunno bout 3sge, but the earlier ones (SV21, 1988-93) came with the 3sfe, my dad has one, its carby, its really good on fuel, but no doubt a slug. My cuz has an EFI, and it goes much better!

No Camry in Australia came with a 3SGE. Only in Japan, the Camry 2000GT was the one with 1st series 3SGE which had the same output as the ST162 Celicas that came out here. It had strut bars similar to the AE92 which went to the firewall, pollen filters, variable TEMS and had a digital dash to name a few but overall, it looked similar to the 2VZ-FE Camry that came here. Also in Japan, only the 1VZ-FE was sold as opposed to the 2VZ sold elsewhere in the world. Don't go for the 2VZ-FE as they are starting to get a bit long in the tooth and repairs are expensive.
Just be careful of the worn valve seals but it shouldn't affect the running. My 3SFE I had before (it's one of those pics with the ST183 alloys at the top of the forums before I sold it) had problems with pinging and carbon build up as well as leaky O-rings. Other than that, it was going very well. Just do a compression test on both the cylinders and cooling system before buying them. Other than that, the rest is bulletproof. I was averaging 9-10L/100km and does 600km on a tank (60L) in the city without trying at all. Really great for a 2L engine.
I think for the price and the reason why you want one of these cars is great. Safer than a Corolla of the similar age, large enough to take 2 more people to the snowfields with skis and still have room for luggage is damn good I think.
However, powerup options are far and few in between. if you can handle that, then I don't think there is anything else you can get that can give you what the Camry can.
Cruise control you'll only get on the Ultima and V6 models and A/C is optional on everything below the Ultima and V6 (i.e. CSX, CS Limited, CSi, CS, Exec, SE)

If you want a good 4cyl Camry, then maybe go for an SXV20...
The 4cyl's go alright for what they are, and that model camry has pretty good features...

I'll 2nd that comment by Rolla Boy.. however, worn valve stems also plagued the 5SFE and sludging was a problem for the 3VZFE. Change the oil every 5,000km rather than the recommended 10 and you should get away with the problem of the worn valve stem (on all the 2nd and 3rd Generation Camry's).
Only downside with the SXV series is that it's a bit thirsty for a 2.2 coz of the weight but much much more refined as a city car.
Parts though aren't as common here from Japan and I haven't seen many wide body Camry at the wreckers. That's unless you plan to put Japanese features that never came here on it such as fog lights.

I was not referring to the widebody dude... The model after the widebody was what I was talking about...
It was either the 5SFE 4cyl or the 1MZFE 6cyl...

Thanks everyone for your information on this, gives me a better idea of what i'm looking for.
Doesn't really matter about the 3sge, just thought some did come with it but i've learn't something now!
Power isn't a big concern, more efficency as i'll be doing 500+ km a week in it. Some creature comforts would be nice too which seems fairly easy to find in a Camry.
Cheers

I thought of the Camry a boring car to drive, but hey it's nice and smooth (Camry CSX 4cyl).
I remember getting into one overseas (Philippines), much better features than the Australian delivered model

There great cars the 88-91 models are a bit boring but nice to drive and easy on the fuel. However we now own the a 92 wide body model and its great the 2.2 has a little more grunt than the 2L but this is off set by the weight gain (i've dragged both models together) ours even has factory cruise, power windows and air con and power steer. Its a great car does 10L/100km in the city wether you thrash it or just cruise and our best on the open road sitting at a constant 117kph at 3000rpm is 7.2/100.
They are a great car dad and I call them the macca's car. Built for the masses and goes well for what it is. But you have to get a 5speed to go anywhere the auto just plugs along.

Hey,
I used to hook around in an SV21 3SFE Auto Camry. All I can say is: it was a Tonka Truck. Survived manualizing the gearbox, holding it in gear til around 7500-8000rpm for nearly 200,000kays. Had 60,000kays when I got it, sold it for $5,500 at 250,000kays.
Look them over really carefully. With full servicing, they last forever. Wasn't too bad on fuel, could cart a decent amount of gear with it, although it didn't like towing things too much. Excellent car to pull things out of sticky situations - like an old XBGSV8 ute that had sank past its sills in the backyard. At standard height they will cope quite well with 4WD'ing exploits, although the front spoiler will hate you for it.
If I were to buy another new (post 1978) car, it'd be an SV21, no question. Just don't buy Super D*ck Protector - SDP760 - 'cause you can't get laid in a Camry.... It's had a very hard life.
L8a,
Prud

at least our cars have the room to get laid in... not like a cramped corolla or coupe supra or celica....
do like me: get some nice 15" rims with low profiles, then play the lowering game... sweet
hardly any1 expects a camry to jump at the suburban cristmas tree drag either
