Dash Lights - Help Needed

hey
having just driven my RA28 at night for the first time, i've discovered that the lights on the dash are not very bright at all(i have to look at my gauges for a while just to get a reading, i was wondering is this a problem with the rheostat or were all celicas like this?...
would it help to just bridge the circuit so that the rehostat isnt incorporated or will this screw with the instruments?

I've owned 3 ra28's and they are all like that I've never pulled out the globes to look but later model cars have a green condom thing over the globe. If it does you could take that off and see if that would be brighter(you would lose the green however)
My brother replaced his covers with blue ones in his ra40 available from jaycar which look pretty cool but don't brighten things up.

Replace the globes. Mine were like that and when I took them out I found that they were pretty dark and replaced them all and it made the world of difference.

I just got some little LED dash lights. There were like a little ricer brand, type r I think, from super cheap or other places. Just wired them into the dash and stuck them onto the steering column and pointed them at the speedo and tacho. Made it a cool blue colour too.

RA28/3's don't have those condom things over the globes, it's just got a green film over the instraments so it looks green, I wanted to change mine to blue but couldnt

They all have this problem i pulled mine apart totally and cleaned it all out. The inside of the instruments is a sky blue kind of colour and this is what makes it green. I have tried painting the inside with white paint but this dosnt work very well because it just changes the colour. If you really want to put the hard yards in without doing a LED up grade pull all the instruments out including the dimmer and hit all the contacts with brasso to try and lower the resistance. It will work a bit better.
Good luck

That's exactly what happened on my RA23 a while back... the dash lights were getting real dim, so I ran a better earth from the dash lights to the chassis and they got bright again!

Yeah, I'll try for the blue. I think it would look really good. It was one of the things at the time that were put in the too hard basket. With the one I'm restoring (that I just got and 18R-G for) we'll take no short cuts with it.

I didnt read the whole topic so I dont know if someone already mentioned that you can wash that green film off with some dissolvent(?). If I remember right I used ethanol. Use first some gentle dissolvent so you dont dim/melt the plastic. I have three different coloured leds there so I can choose between blue, orange and green. I can adjust brightness by original
dimmer.

i thaught the rheostat (or potentiometer, i can never remember which) was a dimmer switch? and yes, i have turned it up, still nothing, this is why i suggested brdgeing the terminals on the rheostat to create zero resistance thus giving brighter lights...

You will find that when the knob is turned to the "most bright" position the terminals are bridged anyway, so this won't achieve much.

It will if the resistive wire/track is wearing out or gumed up with greesy dusty shit! In fact the item in my TA22 used to measure a few hundred ohms until I gave it a good clean!

Man I read this this morning and thought, hmmmm...
My instrument cluster was already half out and I have heaps of globes around the house... So I went out and replaced all the main globes as they were not bright... The old ones were soon to blow as the tips and about half the globes in total were black... Also, I removed the 'condoms' and they are heaps brighter... It looks heaps better cause they are white now...

when replacing the globes, be sure to use emery cloth or light sand paper to rub the contacts in the sockets, just to give them a bit of a clean, cause they get very dirty and dont create a good contact anymore, causing the lighting to become bad.justin

i also found that the tungstrum globes provide the best output in the dash lighting situation.
