Can I go faster?

I'm after some friendly advice....
Let's say I'm in a 91 celica with a 3sge, and i'm going to need to replace the engine (for the second time! bit of bad luck, that!), how would I go about putting in a turbo engine instead?
for starters what engine do i want and what do i expect to pay?
what other parts am i going to need?
what changes do i need to make to the car to fit one in?
will fwd be a disadvantage?
maintenance, repairs etc - i expect the more complicated an engine gets the more problems are likely, and i seem to be jinxed with this sort of thing, so is there anything i should be expecting to go wrong?
thanks

you will encounter many problems, many of which are different for everyone...
i'd say your bigest problem would be getting the turbod engine to fit, and correctly seated in its new home... apart from that its dead easy *if you know what your doing*
try a search, i'm sure something like this has been done (or discussed before on the forums)

Hmm a 1991 is a ST185 right? The motor you are after is a 3S-GTE our of either a ST185 or maybe the newer ST205.
As these motors all share the same block if you get a halfcut you shouldn't have to many dramas fitting it into you car.
Probably the easiest is to get a ST185 with a GTE and just transfer over. The cost all depends on how much you can do your self, but there are alot of things you have to take into account. Front cut ($3000?), Exhaust ($1000?), intercooler/piping (ST185 will have one that should fit you car), Fluids, ECU wiring.....lots of other little things?
Hope this helps a bit....there is probably lots of things I have not said as well.
Cheers

the most common turbo engine swaps for st164 and st184 celicas would be the 3sgte from the celica gt4
a search will reveal the details of this
the biggest hurdle is converting to fwd

I still don't know what I'm doing but I'm going to do it!!!!
search gave me heaps to think about. all the hard work has been done before, i'd like to see how various projects turned out and whether they were worthwhile in the end.
from what I can gather it's the gearbox and clutch I'm going to have the most problems with... how much should i expect to pay for an MR2 engine and transmission? i was thinking along the lines of a st185 and maybe strengthening a box, trying to keep costs down.
Anyway, great site, heaps of help, thanks all.

Dont even bother with the mr2 transmission, linkages around the wrong way, its a pain in the bum. Just treat the box you got with some consideration and it should serve you fine if your gunna stay fwd.

best bet is the 3sgte out of the 185 Gt4 - easiest of the lot to swap - expect to pay around 2500 - 3500 for the front cut with all you need ..
Or you could just sell the 3sge after repairing it and buy a Gt4 - they retail for about 10K at the moment for a nice one ..

hoping to get the front cut for less than that if possible.
just buying the gt4 isn't an option - i'm going to go heaps faster and have heaps more fun this way.
another thread mentioned strangthening a standard gearbox - who does this, and how?

it will be cheaper to convert the GT4 box to FWD than get the 2WD box strengthened
talk to [mikey] about converting the GT4 box to FWD he has researched and completed this sucessfully.
