W40 vs W55

I'm thinking about buying an RT112 wagon, $200 It has an 18R or 21R or something in it, and an F series Drum brake diff, which I want. It also has a 4 speed which I'm guessing is a W40.
Now, is the input shaft and output shaft differently splined on the W40 to the W50 and others?
I imagine it would be the same as the W50 that came with the 3TGTEU, as I will be using a T -> W bellhousing and possibly a 3TGTEU flywheel and clutch aswell.
I imagine the input shaft wouldn't be the same splined as my current T50 either. Which is 21 spline I think.
I've got a 2TGEU in my KE35, and I am going to put a SC14 on it in the near future. If the W40 is the same splined as a W5x then I will buy the wagon for these parts.
Anyways, if you made any sense out of that, please lemme know what you think.

My undersatnding id that the W55 is basically just a 40 with the o/drive (5th gear) added in. It's been years since i saw both boxes sitting together but i don't recall having to change either the input or the output spline from 40 to 55. i THINK they're the same Karl, If you can find him, giant tomato may be able to help you out here too. cheers struan.

thanks for your help struan. I thought the W50 was the same as W40 but the o/drive gear.
I was really trying to compare W40 with the W55/7 gearboxs.
gianttomato?

W50 is the W40 with an overdrive. W5x boxes are different in that they have alloy cases. That said the input and output shaft splines are the same. In other words you should be able to use the same clutch plate and tailshaft end as on your W40.

okay. are the W55+ boxes the same length?
Now trying to figure out if the driveshaft can be set up with a W40 then later have the gearbox changed to W57.

Gut feeling tells me they are, also I know of a couple people that have put them where W40's used to be and not changed tailshaft length. If you are prepared to wait a few days, I can give you the dimensions. I have one of each out on the ground, but they are separated by 20 km!

as for clutch, alot of people used to use a holden 1 tonner.not sure of the 'how' tho. maybe you should check out what's available for hi-ace/hi-lux in heavy duty type arrangements. The b/housings were interchangeable to suit different engines.
BTW friend of mine was running a "steel case celica" read W50. behind a twin turbo v8 celica. I think there's a few pics of it here at toymods somewhere. Note tho' this car did'nt weigh very much either, which makes a difference to box and clutch life when combined with an aggressive driving style!!!
