I just purchased a Venom 15" response subwoofer & i am wondering how big i should make the box? I have a big pile of 16mm MDF here, is that wide enough?
What dimensions would you guys reccomend and also should i put a port in it? if so how big?
thanks

just let me pull out my spec sheet....... ahh yes, the veenom!
Well, Gaycar specs recommend an enclosure of sealed design, with around 49Litres of internal volume.
I would tend to agree myself, since the woofer can't handle too much power i wouldnt make a box any smaller, nor would i make it too much larger because it just doesnt have the efficincy for it.
Porting - i would AVOID it with this driver. Best off left sealed, and load it with as much power as it will handle!
Definitely use your 16mm MDF, and it will be think enough. Perhaps a small internal brace in the box might help too. Dont forget to get some "GayBond" hi-density wadding to stuff into the box (worth it for $12 a sheet).
Otherwise sell it, and buy the Precision 15 .... it is a MACHINE!

I would definatly recommend using some internal bracing for.
and if you screw the box together use liquid nails or somthing similar to ensure the box is sealed.
the woofer should also be set at an angle to the rear of the box.

thanks a lot for the help guys i just wanted something that is good value for my money, don't want to be spending a fortune on the sound system. anyway, i'd better go make a box .
Also while i have all the speaker people here. I have the common problem of the car (AE93 hatch) nearly rattling to pieces when i have a subwoofer in the boot. just wondering if anyone has any nice ideas of how i can minimize the rattling?

How generic are the seals around the hatch because you could buy a new seal from clark rubber of something and adjust the hatch down so its a bit tighter.
or
Glue the hatch shut with liquid nails

haha, don't think i'll be gluing the ha tch shut! i was thinking more along the lines of getting some of that stickytape that has foam on one side and lining every plastic bit i can find. I would have to make sure that it isn't visible though.

in short - removing all the rattles from your boot will take a LONG TIME! And a lot of effort. When you fix the main rattle, another appears, then another, then another..... and you get the idea.
Best is just do whatever you can and then deal with it (and turn the music up)... as it is if you sub is properly balanced you shouldn't hear the rattles over the normal speakers
