mx 83 Cressida diff swap

hi all
does anyone know if an mx83 cressida Grande lsd diff is torsen or mechanical LSD .And i assume these are both 3.9:1
I would prefer to fit a mechanical lsd as im told torsen are difficult to modify, so as to reduce slip factor .but Mechanical can be easilly modified
Also is anyone aware of ANY other diff that could be used .i have looked at chaser diff but it would involve .getting the entire cradle ,axle and brake assembly
THANX

They are mechanical, AFAIK...Don't think the Torsens appeared until J/UZZ* series Soarers/JZA80 Supras, but undoubtedly someone will correct me if I'm wrong....

thanx i was fairly sure this was the case .i found a 60,000klm lsd that looks like new . ill whack it in for now but might uprgrade it later
cause i definatley will need more traction now with just over 300 h.p at wheels and a stage 1 shift kit

I beleive a few people have put G series centers inside the F series diff housing.

Yes the MX83 don't use a torsen LSD - but torsen LSD's aren't altogether a bad thing, they last a lot longer than anything else due to not having any grindy bits wearing out when they do their thing - it's basically a diff working against a diff... get it? Plus they're progressive with no preload - so they don't behave like a detroit locker, but more like an open diff with more traction and sliding only if you ask for it However, the rate with which they lock up requires changing the centre, they can't just be shimmed up for a heap of preload...
The idea of a G diff in an F case would be something I'd love to hear more about - otherwise I was going to go ahead and put an R200 Nissan diff in there instead. ANYONE done it?

Uh, I strongly doubt an 8" G series centre will fit in a 7.5" F series housing. Also, the bearings on a G series diff are ginormous, and while I've never pulled an F diff I don't think their bearings are anything like the same size...

hmmm its just that the diff place in Newcastle claimed that they could rebuild a mechanical diff .and set it up with more limit and less slip (if you get my drift)
im only trying to improve off the line launches .anyway regardless its a cheap upgrade to the non lsd 180,000 klm (very cranky, clunky) number i have now .
SO is an LSD stronger than my original diff

"set it up with more limit and less slip (if you get my drift)" - now THAT'S bad pun!
Cheap upgrade? weld the bloody thing! Not that I in any way recommend a weldy except for off road fun in a car with a 2 digit price tag
Otherwise go with the stocky LSD, depends how you treat it as to how long it LSD's for! If you want to spend more money, look at adapting a soarer/supra torsen (IF you can FIND one!), or maybe a KAAZ or similiar centre for the G diff.

another option is to look into the TRD G series diff. it is mechanical and worth a bit of research...

Just a quick one...Does anyone know if the JZX81 Chaser LSDs are interchangeable with the MX83???
If so, are they available in Oz???
