does anyone know the best way to get paint off hard plastic????

Treat it like metal and sand it.
It all depends what type of plastic, but don't overheat it.

you rough b@stard apollo (it tail lights, i dont want to sand them!!) after a few google searches, i have come up with a lot of very useful info, but out of all the thing to use, i will use good ol brake fluid, highly recomended on some of the sites i looked at.

You should have said so first off. 
Be careful though that you don't 'mist' the plastic.
If so, then you would need to sand and polish. Yes you can do that to plastic. Tail lights are generally made from acrylic (Or perspex if you are into brand names), if you wanted to know. It's a thermoplastic so it will melt under heat and has a plastic memory.

Use a mild Cut & Polish. It works damm well for removing paint from tail lights! I used it on my TA22 tail lights, They look like new now.

Now we gotta ask what are you doing with paint on the lights? Please don't say you painted them to make them darker?
