New clutch for 7MGTE and R154 Wed, 09 April 2003 07:51 Go to next message
Ok, I got the car from Japan only 3 weeks ago, and I've already done the clutch.
(1988 Toyota Supra 3000GT Turbo-A 7MGTE - R154)

rvrolla and danners----> yes, I know, you told me it would happen. Still more fun than an auto though Laughing Cool

If the clutch is as old as the car, and has to put up with the 280 odd HP from the engine, I suppose its time it went.

So here goes. What clutch should I put back in, how much, and where can I get one ??

I dont want to get the standard toyota clutch, because apparently the one I have now isnt standard anyway.

Should I go for a TRD clutch ?

I'd like to hear from guys who are putting big power through their 5 speed supra R154 gearbox, so I can work out a suitable clutch to buy.

I know HKSPete has an OS Gigen (spelt correctly ??) clutch, but apparently its worth thousands of dollars. What clutch is SUPRAGTE running behind his modded 7MGTE ?

Any help or opinions will be greatly appreciated. Very Happy
Thanks guys.

The best place is Western Clutches at St Mary's.

They are extremely helpful. They let us out into their workshop to use the clutch clamping measuring machine to compare clutches when upgrading even when they're not sellingus the clutch.

I'm probably going to go back to the clutch I was previously running that I got from Western, it was pretty cheap like $160 from memory.

I upgraded to the larger 3.0lt flywheel and larger pressure plate thinking it would definitly be better for the increased power but it is slipping when I turn up the boost. I'll probably go back to the original setup, it never slipped and was quite cheap.

Your clutch is different though to conventional clutches, the r154 has a "pull" type pressure plate whereas most others have push type. This setup is more expensive but meant to be better, give them a call.

Take your existing clutch setup (including flywheel) to a performance clutch shop and they can modify it. Should be able to get the clamp increased, the flywheel machined and a button plate provided for well under $500 if you shop around.

Unfortunately I'm interstate so can't recommend a business for you.

SUPRAGTE---> Yes, the mechanic today told me exactly what you just said, it is a pull type, very good, but a bit more work than taking out a pull type, and a bit more expensive as well.

7M-Brisbane---> That is exactly what my mechanic told me today !! He said take mine, and they will check it out and do what needs to be done, machine it if necessarry, they can also re-face my clutch and put ceramic buttons on it as well.

The mechanic quoted $250 to $300 to do the work, if I supply the clutch and necessary parts. Very good price I think, and he has worked on 4 or 5 of my past supra's and celica's.

obviously i have to pay for the clutch and machining as well, which could be up to $500, as 7M-Brisbane said as well.

Toyota quoted about $750 retail for all the parts, clutch plate, spiggot bearing, face plate, and something else. That was for a standard 7MGTE R154 gearbox setup.

I got those prices for you, they are nearly exactly the same as danners price.
