Yes, you can use a 20/21/22R crank in an 18R block, but some machining is required to make it fit. It has been done before.

wicked
cheers,
do i need to use the 20/21/22R rods and pistons too, or can i get away with just using the crank??
What would that stroke it out to?
Anyone know what machine work needs to be done??
i'd assume the bearing lobes or something like that??
cheers,
marki

You'll definitely need different rods and possibly pistons, but I don't know the specifics sorry. If you can find the specs for the 18R and 22R you should be able to figure out what needs to be done. As for machining, I believe the block has to be machined to clear the crank counterweights, but again I'm not 100% on the specifics. Any machinist should be able to figure it out for you anyway.

oo oo i know this one...... you can bore an 18r to a 2.2 safely meaning you can use the 20r pistons then you can stroke it using the 22r crankshaft but you have to machine the crank in 3 places to fit to the 18r block.. it is alot of money involved but it is well worth it in the end.. it is a huge power gain.
that will bring it out to 2.4 ltr's from the 22r crank.. i am pretty sure you can use the 18r con rods as they take the same con rod bearings as the 22r but the 22r's use different crank and main bearings thats why you have to machine the crank to suit. they have slightly bigger diameter main and crank bearings.

if you were boring out the cylinders, and used a lower compression piston, would it not be defeatist?
i mean, going from a 9.7:1 piston from the 18R-G down to a 8.5:1 (pulled a figure) for the 20R, would that not almost lose the power before you gain it in some sense?
I realise that boring would increase toqure, but wouldn't it be far MORE beneficial to maintain a similar compression ratio?
Im just wonder guys... no criticism of what you are doing here of course!

I have spoken to a couple of people who have built 2.4 litre 18R-G's, and in their opinion the gains simply aren't worth the effort involved. You'd get much better results for less effort and cost by slapping a turbo on a stock 18R-GU.

Why are you sitting in front of your PC when you should be putting a turbo on your 18R-G? Go outside and do it now!!
