What is stitch welding? Wed, 19 June 2002 04:59 Go to next message
I've heard the term "stitch welding" thrown around by a few people. I gather it's used to improve structural rigidity, but what exactly is it?
Are there any downsides to it?

Stich Welding is a form of seam welding !

When you seam weld a car with a solid weld it has no give in it at all and can crack with the flexing of the car body. It does make the body more rigid.

Stich welding is the same practice only instead of 1 long weld down each seam you use a series of short welds. I have been told the optimal is an inch long weld then an inch long gap.

Downside - Looks a bit ugly and the lesser informed may think its accident repairs.

Upside - Greatly reduces body flex for improved handleing. I personally swear by it and noone seams to mind how it looks on the show car !

Sorry for my ignorance, but are you able to give some examples of where on the car you would do this?

Also, do you have any pics so that I can see what it looks like?

On y car the engine bay and front end is all Stick welded. All the seams on most cars are just Spot welded. This type of welding allows alot of body twist and flex.

My old girl is stiched on ALL the seams in the engine bay ! I'll try find you a pic.

On a rally or serious road car you would Stich weld ALL the seams that are Spot welded.

here's an example of stitch welding. The advantage being that if a crack develops in one of the welds, it doesnt spread along the whole seam.

updated: found a better pic, check it out a few posts down

I agree... the method Rod outlined looks better (1" on/off) and is the best way of doing it, You can't see it in any of my car's Photo's, but everywhere in a race setup.

Can anyone suggest a place or person than can do this type of work.

I can't afford to teach myself how to weld on my car.

Thanks all.

Any pannel-beater can do the job! Although you might find that its cheaper to take the car to a welder!
