W55/57/58 for 4AG

reading an old early issue of zoom and it had a sprinter with a 1GGTE in it, the article said : " another favourable finding was that the original 4ag five-speed transmission literally bolts straight to the back of the two-litre six". If this is true it means the 1G engines and the 4A engines have the same bellhousing to engine bolt pattern. Meaning a W5x gearbox from a 1G series engine would bolt up to a 4AG, solving the weak T-50 problems when boosted. anyone done this or can confirm/deny the articles claim.

I read the same article, and thought the same thing, but it must be wrong, otherwise we would all have supra boxes bolted up to our 4A-GEs. But really, who would be dumb enough to put a T50 behind a 1G-GTE????

mabey it would last for a while. I can see using the T-50 would have simplified the conversion. Anyway have you physically tried to fit a 1G bellhousing onto a 4A block or is it just word of mouth your going by? the artical didnt mention any gearbox info other than that.

I have never tried it, and I havn't even heard from anyone who has tried it, but with the price people pay for 4A to W5X bellhousings, I assumed it to be not true. If it is though, I'd be pretty bloody happy. If anyone here thinks there might be the slightest chance of this being true, I will ask IDB tomorrow, as I believe they were the ones that did that particular conversion. I think just the physical size difference of the boxs would rule out swapping bellhousings.
Plus putting a T50 behing a 1G-GTE isn't really gonna simplify the conversion, 'cos you'll soon have to get under there again to replace the busted box.

The only way to get a w55 onto a 4ag engine is to mod one up, i have already done this and am currently looking at making a couple more for sale. the w55 has a completely different mounting style to the t50 on both ends of the b/housing that article must have been wrong. although you never really know what toyota got up to back in the day?!

the W-55 came out behind a heap of engines : (3T-GTE)(1G-GE),1G-E, 6M-GE, 2L/2L-T ,1S, 21R more... thats 6 different series' of engines.
the T-50 : 3A, 1S ,2T /3T-E 4A-GELU thats 3 differnt series'
you say "the w55 has a completely different mounting style to the t50 on both ends of the b/housing" It depends on what you got the box out of, obviously the mounting points between bellhousing and gearbox will be different, but a 3T-GTE with W55 will have a identical bellhousing to engine pattern as a 2T with T-50.

Put it this way, do you think Dellow Automotive would be able to sell 4A to W5X bellhousings for $800 if the same thing existed from the factory?

IS that just the bellhousing?? I thought Dellow's bellhousings were closer to $500. Thas what I'd been told about the 1UZ->W58. Maybe its just that one...

That's what they told me when I rang up to ask about it (years ago), $800 for the bellhousing and another 800 for a reco'd supra box (before I knew to ask about W55, 7 or .

and the other end is a lot different. sure you can put a w55 onto a 2t but we're talking about 4age which is different to the 2t/3t. the only rwd boxes that will bolt straight on to the 4age is the 3a k50, t50 with the 4a bellhousing, and the 4 speed versions of these.

we actually compared t50 and 1g bellhousings - yes they are similar, but they certainly don't bolt on!!!
for the $$ i'd get a 3a bellhousing and make up an alloy spacer/adapter to suit a w57 - but then i have access to cnc equipment......
