Exhaust Wed, 19 June 2002 10:31 Go to next message
Just wondering.

By the look in the manual I have (I havn't bothered to look directly at the engine itself yet), I have a 4-1 setup from the exhaust manifold.

Would it be beneficial to insert a part to make it a 4-2-1 setup?

apollo are these the factory cast items on your camry? if they are i think you might be better off buying a set of extractors as i dont think there would be much point in modifying standard headers.

from memory 4-1 give more top end power 4-2-1s give more bottom end so you need to decide what out want out of it. personly i think just about every 4 cyl N/A car i have driven would benifit from more bottom end

this is bit off the topic but how much would a 4-2-1 exhuast cost?
and is it quiet? i'm looking for a quiet exhaust.

thats right 4-2-1 for sreeting (torque) and 4-1 is for high end power or racing, not much good if you dont have any torque down low to get there

as for extractors being quiet, it all depends on what sort of muffler and resonator you are using mate

restonator?

those evil restrictive things? they're almost as bad as those "Cat" things! Razz

on a serious and off topic note though, I'm quite excited, on friday! i get my exhaust, for all of you who don't know...

I've got a 4age sprinter (conversion from 4ac that died) and it's still got the 4ac exhaust, i'm getting a 2.25" exhaust with one straight through muffler from the 2" extractors. no cat either, as they didn't come with sprinters? or that's what i've been told, but don't quote me on that.

So, i'm hoping to get the power gains from my pod filter, extractors and ofcourse, the new exhaust.

And also, my extractors were custom made as of lack of exhuast manifold with the engine, they cost about $500 installed from fastfit or so (in vic)..

All I need now is a few TRD stickers, 18" rims and a massive bodykit! just kiddin Smile

Also! I had nothing to compare the 4-2-1 extractors to, cos I never had a chance to use the car with just a rwd manifold.

From memory the camry manifold comes down into a twin pipe flange, with the twin pipes extending about 600mm from flange to collector, combined this system is basically a crude 4-2-1 system. Those of you familiar with a std 2T- maifold will understand the concept. This design basically extends mid-range rather than top end that the 4-1 style of exhaust. If the manifold is adequite for the flow capabilities of the head, a considerable improvement in overall performance can be had by installing a freer flowing exhaust from the collector back. The design of a 4-2-1 system, if tuned with the correct exhaust system, physically scavenges the burnt gasses form the chamber across a defined rev range(controlled by the many thins such as primary vs secondary tube lengths/diamaters, exhaust system flowing capacity, port shape, etc.) Extractors or "factory headers", as opposed to a manifold, generally pair primary exhaust runners relevant to firing order, such as pairing cylinders 1/3 and 2/4 to take adantage of the pulse(i.e. cyl 1 exhaust valve closing as cyl 3 is opening).
Sorry, just got carried away with theory and design.

Collector = cat?

If so, I've been advised that it's better to get the headers/extractors and all the stuff before it done first before doing a cat-back exhaust. I think that ties in with what you said there too Jimmyd.

High end speed? I couldn't give a crap about. Just about all cars these days can do 200+ kmph. Who cares? No point when you drag to go above 100kmph anyway.

Yep, I'd prefer the power down low. So would getting a proper 4-2-1 seperate plumbing job done be the best then?

I've got a trd sticker. Smile Havn't put it on the car yet though.
