Advice on a old school Toyota

Hey all, pending the damage done to my 1jz soarer from being rear ended on the motorway, I'm having to face the outcome that I may need to replace my car. I'm hooked to Toyota's build quality and performance and would be looking for another, unfortunately I won't have the budget I had on my soarer. =/ For up to 7 thousand I was wondering what you guys would recommend, only requirements are that it needs to be a auto since my girlfriend has to drive it too. Was looking at a old supra or corolla but would like to hear what you guys who have experience with these cars have to say. Thanks

Buy a AE82 Twinky - 5 speed. for $6000.00 you will get a great one!
Spend the other $1000.00 on driving lessons for the missus in a manual.

Geez, cars built in the 80's are "old school" now? I must be getting old...
Supra or Corolla is good, but those are fairly different cars. Perhaps you should describe in more detail what you want in a car. Performance? Practicality? Comfort? Space? Fuel efficiency? You're the one who has to live with the decision remember!

if we are counting the 80's - then its a mrk2 Supra for sure
if its onld school in the true sense - then grab yourself a nice neat RA2* celica, buy an auto 1g-gte and convert baby! Then you have auto, power, driveable, cool, old school and still a toyota

Yea mate GF is only 21 so still on her P's, can't legally drive a manual yet. =/
Called around a bit found a mate selling a sprinter for 2k, thing is he's transplanted a CA18DET into it. ~_~ Will check it out tomorrow. I just want to get back on the road again. Sorry if any of you took offense to my "old school" remark, wasn't intended to be derogatory.

Queensland, she took her test using an auto, so she can't drive a manual without a seperate test or wait until she hits opens.

Take whats left of your soarer and drop it into a MA61 supra. Then you'll be cooking in style

Or, for practicality, why not drop it into an '89 GLX Cressida? (I spec an '89 so that it qualifies as "80s" )
Nice and quick, 4-door practicality, and comfy to boot...Oh, and auto for the missus!
