Hesitation upon acceleration Tue, 15 April 2003 13:06 Go to next message
Car has started playing up the past couple of days.

When 'cold' (its still 25 degerees c here around 80F??) starting the car seems to have no power when u reach for the gas pedal!

If depressed in a quickish fashion the car hesitates and stops even though the motor is still engaged in first and doesnt rev out. get back off the gas then back on and it seems to have power coming on in waves

E.g i get some torque from idle to 2grand then it fades off then comes back on strong again at 3grand but there is a major lull/hesitation at 4grand

Once the car warms up a bit the hesitation seemed to fade for a while. But now it seems like im stuck with it once the car is warming up even.
only appears to be in first and second ( dont really take the other gears out that much) and it doesnt happen once the engine has warmed up.

Im thinking fouled plugs cauz it is running a bit rich, but this problem only suddenly happened a few days ago....can anyone else help me out here?

If it's only happening when the engine is warming up, I'd be checking the operation of the temperature sensors and the cold start injector.

Hmmm,
My cressida does exactly the same thing. When you start it cold, the first time you accelerate away it bogs down at 2 grand in second and after a while it just starts accelerating like normal. Only does it the first time I acclerate away from my house in the morning. Where abouts is the cold start injector? Is it in the plenum somewhere? Pardon my ignorance, I just got it a couple of weeks ago.

Cheers
Binny

At what point does the cold start injector stop working

THis afternoon on the way home from work there were still lulls for about 10mins of driving after i left work. This is before the temp got up to speed.

Mind you the temp gauge hasnt hit the middle mark in awhileso perhaps its the temp sensor.

Any thoughts on what to do with the cold start injector?

i have a spare one, should i pull apart the plenum and swap them over?

ta guys.

no the temp not hitting middle is normal...mine used to start one below at all times until got very hot in traffic/ on highway then reached out to normal...so dont worry there...cold start injectors sometimes play up on these engines i dare say...it should be stopping by the time the car is to operating temperature..u shouldnt be giving it a footful cold anyway Rolling Eyes

Well i must say this is a fu*k off difficult task to get to the cold start injector, broke some tools and gave up.

Will it be a direct exchange or injectors or will it be blocked and need cleaning?

id say clean them and have serviced/ replaced as you see neccessary. in the end it might not be the cold start injector, but its normally some little fartass problem that causes agony before diagnosis and repair...I never bothered to fix mine so i dont know what the problem was...but i know when it got warm it revved quite smoothly.
