I don't quite understand it myself but it works. just crank the engine and turn it till it fires.

i understand your instructions now, as you have to run power through HT lead #1, found where TDC is today, someone has marked it with a whiteout marker, also there are two holes on the cam pulley that point "up" also, i can work it out by pulling out plug # 1, then turniong the motor over with my hands until it is easy to do (because it is trying to compress the entire atmosphere instead of what is confined in the cylinder/combustion chamber) then you just line up the TDC mark on the main pulley.
cheers again.

There are TWO TDCs, not one, so using the above info you have a 50% chance of getting it right.
At the first TDC, Cyl1 will be in compression (which is what you want), at the other TDC, Cyl1 will be in its exst stroke (not what you want).
For a engine with a timing belt you can tell by where the cam wheels are. They should have a mark, or hole to align to an indicator on the head.
For a car with a timing chain, pull the cam cover... Cyl1 is at the correct TDC when the valves for that cyl are closed.

i know there are two TDCs, well there is only one, but the piston gets there twice every four stroke two revolution cycle.
thanks for the tip with the mark on the cam pulley, i would quote myself but don't know how and can't be bothered.
i have sorted this problem out, now all i need to do is put it all back together and mess around till it starts.
thanks to everyone for the help.
