Do you mean BOXER engine (horizontally opposed cylinders) or BOXTER (Porsche flat six - in an expensive German convertible).
I guess the only modern boxers that are anywhere near affordable are from Subaru (Impreza, Liberty, SVX etc.) The other manufacturers would be Porsche and Alfa Romeo I think.

are you talking about the wrx boxer or the alfa romeo boxer???
im assuming you mean the wrx, if so i think you could fit one of the 2litre motors in their, go with something around 1996, they had the bigger turbo and will be alot cheaper to buy than say an my99-01

WRX motor only are or were under $1000 I think $750 from memory,I had the same thoughts a few months ago but you will strike g/box problems to start with.I decided to stick with the rota and add a turbo even if I have to go back to a 12A it will still be cheaper hp

Have you actually seen how wide an EJ20t is? theres enough width in a WRX engine bay to fit a wide V8. theres simply not enough room in a xA23 to fit one as they mount very low in the subie engine bay and their chassis rails sit high unlike the xA23 which has low narrow chassis rails.
then theres also the gearbox problem which isnt really that bad u just gotta remove the front diff from the casing.
i thought about this conversion for the same cost effective reason but it ended up that it would cost twice as much of many of the options out there .BTW ive got a TA22

Ditto to Alainve, the EJ20 (came in both the Liberty and Impreza) are a very wide engine. Even in the Liberty which is a wide car compared to a TA series, its still a nightmare to get the spark plugs out past the chassis rails! It would require MAJOR work to get it to fit.
You might have batter luck with the turbo 1800 boxer motor out of a L series Subie, but dont quote me on that!
Also, Subie gear boxes are weak if you want to drive hard. Even with STI close ratio internals we managed to destroy 2 boxes last year rallying a Liberty. 2nd and 3rd gears totaly destroyed! somthing to keep in mind.
Good luck!
Craig.

I've been told you can fit a 2lt V8 in a TA23 (imported from usa). Is this true? If so wouldn't it be just as wide as a boxer engine?

ooh, that would be nice!! 1000 for suby's best!! what's the deal with bellhousings and w5X boxes??
oops, hi-jacked thread...
..clears throat...
when you think about it, a boxer is way wider than a v8 (that's why they use a V better use of space) I've never seen one but I don't like your chances, look at the tight fit for a 1G, there aint much space in there...
I guess only the tape will tell!!

either 20B turbo or 13B turbo will easy fit.. and be lots of fun, or if you want V6 go quadcam camry or VG30turbo from 300ZX maybe (ive seen one of these in a datto 1600 so i guess it would fit).

for starters dont bother with a 12A theyre getting too old to find parts for. however a 13B is relativeley easy to get and with lots of knowledge around are the better choice.
new engine mounts need to be made and your fuel system upgraded to EFI (if not already) possible modification to the gear shifter location in the floor (this varies depending on where you locate the engine. custom tailshaft
theres not much to changing the engine its making it work reliably that takes skill
BTW.why choose a rotary? its like eating a meat pie with fish sauce. Toyota and Mazda it just tastes funny

My RA23 has a 13B and I love it,very nice combo I feel and it's been very reliable
One of the best cars I've owned.
I did the conversion myself and it went together pretty easy.
It's really is a good way to go.BTW 13bt is not legal in NSW.

Alainve: I have heard alot of good comments about rotaries (like the one above) and have heard how easly they are turbo'ed and/or supercharged. (rx2+rotary+turbo+supercharger=hardcore sideways action )
Next question is where do I find out what is legal in qld to put in the celica?

go to the rta website for qld.
you'll be fairly lucky if they let you put that in your car.
in NSW, there are different rules for <1100kg and >1100kg.
the ta23 is under 1100kg, and because rotors put out so much power, they double their capacity for purposes of determining what you can and cant put in.
so you'd be trying to put a 2.6L turbo in, which is well over what you're allowed.
just go for a 13b bridge port. still has loads of power.

where did a 2.6l come from?
you can turbo and/or supercharge a 13b can't you?

you're not *actually* putting a 2.6 turbo in there.
but the RTA considers rotaries as double the capacity, hence a 13B (1.3L) is considered a 2.6L by them, for purposes of whether it's legal or not
