NEWB HELP...modding my Paseo

Ok, I have a '96 Paseo. I'm looking to get some more overall power out of it, and I need your help.
What are some different things I could do for various prices. I have an initial budget of about $700 to a grand, with more to come later.
What about air intake kits? These seem like a good, affordable option? what sort of power increase will I get from different options.
you guys know the drill...lol
thanks.

Personally I'd say that it's better to save your money for the time being.
You can always make a few simple modifications like air filter, cold air intake, exhaust and extractors... but you're never going to make it into a rocketship.
It really depends on what you want.
I don't know too much about the Paseo myself, but from memory I think you'll find that the Starlet GT engine will bolt straight in. That stock motor will have more power than your current engine will ever have with any modifications.
Yes it's a lot of money and you probably can't afford it for a year or two.. but it's well worth saving up for.
Failing that, there are really no other performance options for a Paseo.. at the end of the day they're a bit hairdresser-ish and were never designed to go that fast

Oh, regarding the engine swap - if you do this you will need to get an engine that is newer (or at least the same year!) than your car for it to be legal.

Oh yea, I know I'm not going to make it a 'beast'. I was just thinking along the lines of what you suggessted. Just a few things to make it a little faster. Just along the lines of an air intake and a new exhaust system.
Where should I start in going for these mods?

air filter, exhaust, cams, head work, high compression pistons, shot peened and blanced internals, extractors, ECU
ROFL... you'd still be slow as shit, i'm sorry, these cars arent meant to go fast...
but if your willing to throw your money away, any performance shop will gladly laugh at you, i mean, do the work for you

haha, I appreciate the honesty.
I've decided to go with the 1.3L Starlet Gt Turbo engine swap that's beed suggested. Any thought on that?

its a good little engine, fairly 'revvy' and great power, plus a turbo - cant go wrong really
having the turbo on really makes it easier to start getting some decent power on a budget, and boost is just so cool

Dude... the majority of people WILL tell u not to waste ur money modifying the paseo man.. and i guess they would be right in saying that...
if u want it to fly u need to change the engine, or turbocharge it.. and 700-1000 WONT CUT IT !

hmmmm...seems like the engind swap is the way to go. I'm going to look into it in the next few weeks. I've beentold it should be about 2 grand to get and fit it. Not too bad, really.

Shoalin Grasshopper,
Hurricane make extractors to fit the 5e-fe. Along with a 2" exhaust these make a tiny little difference. This will modification will blasically blow budget. I am assuming your 1996 is the last of the EL44 (early model). These engines made 74kw at 6400rpm but weren't happy to rev there often. The extractors provided a bit better midrange (smooth out that laggy feeling around 3200rpm) and a little in the top of the rev range. Replacing the air filter box assembly with a pod filter will give you more top end but will rob you of alot of midrange torque (yes all that plastic bendy piping from the throttle body does actually do something). I refitted my airbox afterwards and could really feel more midrange surge but lost some top end power.
The 4E-FTE motor is your best performance option and an easy swap but do allow a bigger budget for extras such as exhaust and possibly a better fuel pump or fuel regulator.
If all you have is $1000 bucks then Nitrous is the only way to make the little paseo really move. This isn't legal but then again neither are half the modified cars on the road.

mate i just had a 4agze fitted to my rolla and i can tell you now that you will be suprised at what it will really cost you.
starting out with a budget of $1000 will not get you any where realistically.
i have a friend with the same motor and they sound great with a pod filter and 2" cat back, but the performance still dosn't quite measure up.

Yes the little seo's aren't a performance car, (I know, I have one)having said that chaps in the US have them doings 12's with the 4efte, they are under 900kg,u can get the 4efte head and bolt to the 5efe (& variants h) block and run low boost 6-7 psi even with the high comp, but unless u can DIY u won't do it 4 1000 rods, parts are cheap (and liley to get cheper with SEVs as imports like the starlet gt become to costly to comply etc.
Check out www.paseopimp.com, those guys know thier stuff and have forums, links to parts like intakes etc, one the best mods u can do is to get a pulley, sway bars, brace and exhaust, u can try running Optimax and advancing the timing a few degrees (but this is only good for a few more KW and definatley NOT good for the motor in the long run, hence my rod through the block on the first eng (on my sec now).
hope that helps.

I have a 1992 Paseo and was thinking of the 4E-FTE. Did you end up doing the swap in your car? If so would love to find out some details and costs.
Thanks
