MA71 Steering issues after Alignment/Tyres Mon, 21 April 2003 03:35 Go to next message
(Sorry for Long Post, but it will cut down posts)

I got new tyres and a wheel alignment on my Wife's MA71 Supra on Saturday. The Kumho 712 Ecstas were OK, but the objection that my wife had was:

1)Steering not returning to centre (not self centring)
2)Drift to the left
3)The "centre" changes after doing a left turn or a right. After turning right, to drive straight ahead the wheel has to be turned to 2 o'clock position. This goes back to 12 o'clock after turning left.

Things I tried to check:
Tyre pressures now all 32 psi
Flush power steering fluid
Check and mark camber bolts to check that they arent shifting with driving
Check and mark steering rods - no shifting after driving

My thoughts:
Some steering rack problem, but I can't understand how ?

First of all jack the front of the car up. Have a look at where the wishbones join the xmember, there are bushes in there, you should be able to see them. If they look shitty they most likely are. Now with the steering it sounds like balljoints. While the car is up grab the wheel top and bottom and wiggle it in and out and see if you have play. If you do you will need to replace the ball joints. It's to be expected with a 10+ old car.

I rang up my mechanic (now it's after the long weekend) and he says there may be some play in the steering rack bushes. That may make sense, because it seems to fix itself after turning up some lock quickly, then straightening it out under less load with the wheels turning. It sounds like it is a real big job to change the bushes though! (An engine out job?)

Ahh yes, forgot you said the steering was "drifting" yeah that does sound lick the bushes that hold the steering rack in place. The steering rack would be moving. No it's not an engine out job but it would be easier Very Happy

Thanks! Now for the hard part

1) Getting the money for someone to tackle it
2) Finding the parts

OR

3) Convincing my wife this is a good time to say goodbye MA71, and hello $$JZA80$$ (shame about the new tyres though - I could always run them on my JZA70 Rolling Eyes )
